• DiscKnight query

    Hi folks,

I was checking the disc on my old but still functioning RiscPC.

It got near to the end of checking the disc structure but failed with the message:-

*** unrecoverable error in run time system: Not enough memory, malloc
    failed, (heap overwritten)

I was not creating an undo file.

The nearest error messages listed in the guide are:

"Errors prevent the completion of checking"

Lack of memory or physical disc errors prevented DiscKnight from
finishing the checks. Examine the output for lines beginning with
a '*' which may describe actions to perform or addition
parameters to be given to DiscKnight on subsequent runs.

    "Errors prevent completion of fixing"

Lack of memory or physical disc errors prevented DiscKnight from
finishing the checks. Examine the output for lines beginning with
a '*' which may describe actions to perform or addition
parameters to be given to DiscKnight on subsequent runs.

Neither of which quite match what I got.

The RiscPC has 143 M of memory.

    Can anyone help please.

Just checked the backup disc inside the RPC. It's 60GB compact flash
    drive.

The test finished and reported ok but I still got a memory related
    message.

    Curiouser and curiouser.

    Solved my own problem.
In task Display I took the next slot down and the Free up.
    All is now working correctly.

Assuming you are running DiscKnight from the front end, it will launch
the DiscKnight command line program in a task window with an initial
wimpslot of 640K. It will then automatically grow this as necessary
while checking the disc, if there are a lot of objects on the disc it
    may require many more MB.

I would have though the problems stemmed from not having enough free
memory at the time it was running, rather than what your wimpslot next
was configured to. But if you get any more problems, please let me know
    via the support email address.

Thanks druck. It's all working fine now and both discs are good. I'll try
to remember to check what's happening with the memory when I next have
    occasion to use it.
