• tclpdf versus pdf4tcl - a measured comparison

It has been asked several times what tclpdf can do that pdf4tcl cannot.
There is now a written answer:

    https://fossil.sowaswie.de/tclpdf/file?name=doc/TCLPDF-VS-PDF4TCL.md&ci=tip

It is measured rather than remembered: every "no" is backed by a grep
over the pdf4tcl 0.9.4 source or by a test in a live interpreter, and it
goes in both directions - what pdf4tcl can do and tclpdf cannot (the Tk canvas, AcroForm fields, catPdf, TIFF among them) stands in the same
tables. The short version: the one structural difference is the font
path - glyph IDs with ToUnicode versus one 8-bit encoding per font - and
the territory tclpdf was built for is invoices, archiving,
accessibility, tables with page breaks and non-Latin text.

pdf4tcl also allows to attach a file to the PDF. At least I believe it
does, I use it in an app by adding the PDF-Objects directly, and have
sent this to the author some long time ago.

A fork exists here https://github.com/gregnix/pdf4tcl and seems to
be better maintained, based on the commits.

Christian: attachments were listed as a yes on both sides - attachFile/embedFile were never in doubt; the measured difference was
only the /AFRelationship entry that PDF/A-3 hybrid invoices need.

And thanks for the fork pointer. I have since taken a close look at https://github.com/gregnix/pdf4tcl, and it is indeed actively maintained
    - impressively so: gaps named in public have been closed within a day.
That changes what a measured comparison can be. Against a target moving
this fast, keeping the list current would cost nearly as much effort as extending tclpdf itself.

So the comparison is retired. The URL still works and now carries a
short notice saying just that; the dated snapshot, measured against the official 0.9.4 release, remains in the file's history. tclpdf is MIT
licensed - if anything over here is useful over there, an approach, a
check, a test idea, taking it is exactly what the license is for, and
    welcome.

The one comparison that has stayed stable while the feature lists moved:
the two projects complement each other. pdf4tcl's line is working with existing PDFs - merging, forms, encryption. tclpdf's is standards-driven generation - PDF/A and PDF/UA with a validation stand, ZUGFeRD/Factur-X
and Order-X, typesetting, tables, SVG. Both are pure Tcl, and they load
side by side in one interpreter.
