    I'm guessing that whoever owns the remaining assets of Symbolics let
    the domain registration lapse.

    No, I'm pretty sure that the domain was sold by the old owner of the
    domain.

    It was the first .com. It was not the first domain name registered.
    For example, nordu.net was registered January 1, 1985.
