  • seeking early versions of PDP-11 COBOL

    If anyone has tapes or other media with early PDP-11 COBOL implementations
    that predate V4 that is found on the Internet I would be interested to know about it please.

    PDP-11 COBOL was initially a compile-and-go implementation for V1 and was released for RSX-11D and RSTS/E. I am interested to examine early versions to see how it developed to a full compiler.

    The timeline I have constructed so far is as follows:

    Apr 1974 - DEC finalising 1.0
    Jun 1974 - Beta implementation released to 7 sites for testing
    Oct 1974 - COBOL 1.0 product released for RSX-11D and RSTS/E
    ??? 1975 - V2 COBOL for IAS
    Oct 1976 - V2 COBOL for RSTS/E validated by US Navy
    ??? 1977 - V3 COBOL
    Aug 1978 - V3.1 COBOL
    Jun 1980 - V4.1 COBOL (this can be found on the Internet)
