Good day,
I want to post here a little something i have done, its an IRC bot than
allow browsing from IRC to the Gopherspace and Geminispace, its GNU 2 so
if you want to use it or modify it, go wild!, this bot allows not only
for the browsing of both protocols but also allows to host your own
hole/gem with minimal effort, instructions of all of this can be found
on the README, feedback is welcome through issues but know than it will
not necessarily will be applied.
https://github.com/JoseJohnen/BOT_IRC_ALTER_BROWSER/tree/master
The idea of the bot is, more than just create a bot to surf both
networks, is to bring the idea about another kind of browsing,
middleware browsing.
The idea behind middleware browsing is the idea of allowing browsing
than instead of using a client - server approach to the communications directly, make the communication available through a middleware, making
it so that the communication becomes client - middleware - server and
because of that it forcefully becomes client agnostic, as such you can
make inter-services content consumption and allow interaction with
systems from outside a service to another service without really needing
to connect to it, a good example of this is the bridge bots than connect
IRC, DISCORD or some other chats between themselfs, but the idea here is
bring that to other types of services of a different kind, likewise if
you were browsing not only another internet but more precisely an
interserv (as in interconnection of services).
Two things become forceful if you bring this approach to the table:
1) It becomes client agnostic, and as such, the approach to bring the
service can only be back-end based.
2) It forces the communication protocol utilized to make communications
to be of minimal size, cutting the extra weight as a necessity in order
to correctly operate.
Both points basically force an only text approach, that is the reason
why i did this bot as a proof of concept for it using Gopher, IRC and
Gemini, there is other things this approach force too but i think that
is for another, longer conversation.
Its obvious than, because of the limits than Gopher and Gemini both
have, it becomes necessary to make a new protocol for this use case, the details are still in the works but i would like to initiate a
conversation about it and eventually create a protocol specialized in
doing just that, i was wondering if any of you know where can i place
the relevant RFC's callings and how to do it in order to start that work
or if any of you want to contribute to that.
At least from my part i pretend to add such protocol to this very bot
once its ready, you may find some information about it in the readme
when the time comes in the future.
I hope you are all doing well, have a nice day.
JJ
