    Humans behind gophers,

It's my pleasure to announce there is now only one true
    100% RFC 1436 compliant gopher server morena.rip

Only true UMN gopher client loves it when command is with
the slash at the end. 'gopher gopher://morena.rip/'

Millions can now enjoy only one available fully RFC compliant
    gopher server to this date.

Maybe one get inspired by it or at least get upset.

Please remember year 2026 will be the year of Gopher!
Be ready and make your gopher RFC 1436 compliant as gods
    intended.

    May we boot again people

It's nice to see another gopher server up and running, although I'm not
sure that 100% compliance with RFC 1436 is a good thing. For one that
would mean serving periods on a line on their own at the end of text
documents - something I see that you have chosen not to do. This seems
like a good choice but it isn't 100% compliant.

    Best wishes

I'm not sure I understand the issue. Are some gopher clients failing
when the URL is trailed by a slash? I checked with gopherus right now,
    seems to work fine:
    gopherus gopher://morena.rip/
    May we boot again people
Not sure I'll make it, my floppy is not what it used to be.
    So many bad sectors...

It's an interesting one, considering that selectors shouldn't by default
be thought of as a file path and therefore whether servers should strip
leading and trailing slashes is debatable. That Morena and many
servers do seems helpful if not arguably going against the RFC somewhat
and possibly problematic if this behaviour isn't configurable.

Are some gopher clients failing when the URL is trailed by
    a slash?

The issue is the opposite. I assume due to gopher+ feature creep in
original UMN gopher client, if server does not handle that gopher+
thing, one has to type URI scheme 'gopher://' and trailing slash
at the end of the hostname. Otherwise UMN gopher client does not
move a thing for that lovely gopher server.
You can try to reach morena.rip without scheme or slash at the end
    with UMN gopher client.

What I tested the issue is present only in UMN gopher client.
Some servers are even unreachable with it, those, that use some
very simple script to server gopher.

I appreciate your bug report ;/ In the past I moved
Great Gopher of Morena around several server programs and
each of them did own stupid things. Most of them added period
at the end themself, so I removed it.
Most clients show that extra dot. I assume it is job of
of the server to terminate connection right after period
on its own line and not client thing.

I have to check deeper my gopher server, there is not much
choice for Plan 9 operating system however.

Great Gopher here is not yet setled stable, so I welcome
comment like yours, which helps a lot with tuning things
the way that it reach perfection as gods intended.

I let the world know about this masterpiece early, as even in
its early stage of life it's already becoming a gopher model.

I wish you merry booting and happy gophering.

In spite of the limitations of the nqbnf, cr lf . cr lf was the byte
sequence expected at the end of a textfile entity. Otherwise any text
file with a sentence that ended at the end of a line would end the
transfer early. And I'm pretty sure that's what the software of the era
    did.

If gods ask, one can't refuse.

All text documents in Great Morena Gopher now include period on a line
    by itself.

I can already smell perfection, it's close ;/
Probably cutting server code (gophe.rc) in half will get me closer.

    Wish you wonderful gophering

    You might like gopher://hoi.st

It's blog it's full of nice things. Ok, BFG as a Gemini/Gopher
client is not so unix-like, but it's a nice graphical one
and much faster than anything else, even Lagrange.
And image support it's just a function away, at least for PNG's.
