I just subscribed to a Vim mailing list, and I can read it but I cannot
post; I get an error from Google (they obviously host the Vim lists).

Do I need not only to subscribe but also to "join"? - But the "join"
lead me to a Google login.

It seems I need a Google account[*] to post to the Vim-groups; can that
    really be true?

    Janis

    [*] I also cannot use an old Google account I seem to have one created;
I don't know the password any more and the "forgot password" function
doesn't "recognize" me, it says. - I'm locked out!

What list? There are several. What address are you emailing to? What
    error do you get?

I have posted to the the "vim_use" list without "joining" merely being subscribed. Looks like the last time I posted was April last year,
possibly something has changed since then, but I suspect not. I posted
    by emailing to <vim_use@googlegroups.com>

Google has been deleting accounts that have not been logged into for a
while. They sent me email that they were going to delete one of mine a
month or two agao, but I didn't know which one it was. I've created five
to ten accounts over the years, but have only used two of those in the
past year. Both of those are once or twice a year check email accounts.
It seems like the delete notice account may have been one I was using
with a job a few years ago.

I tried two; vim_dev and vim_use. (The latter by accident.)
The address I need was the one suggested; vim-dev@vim.org
(where the dash/underscore discrepancy was said to be okay).

    What error do you get?

    This one (per email reply):

"We're writing to let you know that the group you tried to
contact (vim_dev) may not exist, or you may not have permission
to post messages to the group. A few more details on why you
    weren't able to post:
    * You might have spelled or formatted the group name incorrectly.
    * The owner of the group may have removed this group.
    * You may need to join the group before receiving permission to post.
    * This group may not be open to posting.
If you have questions related to this or any other Google Group,
visit the Help Center at https://groups.google.com/support/."

I ruled out point 1 and 2 (they're suggested on the Vim page), and
point 4 (I see the actual postings). Point 3, the "join", led me to
the Google-login with the reported problem (that they are unable to sufficiently recognize my identity, or some such).

(The previous mail-confirmed subscribe went well. I was able to read
    the posts.)

With that information I may be going to try: vim_dev@googlegroups.com

It's not transparent to me what's going on at Google. (I usually avoid
their "services" if I can - at least those services that require me to
    log-in or create an account.)

    Thanks!

A mail to this one bounced as well. :-(
