The ABC has been repeating episodes of Parkinson in Australia from
the early 80s. They've been doing it for a while but I've finally
got into the habit of recording them in their current timeslot
early in the morning Tue-Fri after Rage. I'm quite enjoying them,
    I love a late night time-warp.

Have you a tuner that records without any encryption concerns? I need
one with a USB plug for a NUC. Is VideoReDo still the one for
editing out the ads, or is there something better?

Sure, the Kogan thing I use records anything and I can read off the
video files from the memory stick in it to convert them on PC and
put them on my main video HDD connected to a different box that I
use to watch video files because the player software on the tuner
    is really crappy.

It doesn't use the programme name for the video file names though,
just a timecode, so I have to sort them.

I need one with a USB plug for a NUC.

NUC? The (formerly) Intel mini-PCs? Anyway it has a USB socket, but
it's an old model and probably hard to find now. I got it when TV
channels first started switching to HD-only. I had a look but I
can't actually find a model number, just "Kogan Digital Set-Top
Box". Its video player and EPG is pretty bad, but compared to other
tuners it flicks through channels quick. Those tuners/TVs that take
a few seconds to respond after each channel change are intollerable.

I never bothered with all that, I fast-forward through the ads on
SBS and don't bother with the commercial channels where there are
just too many of them. It's wonderful though watching Parkinson
throw to an an ad break in one of the episodes made by ch. 7 or 10
and since it's on the ABC you're not actually inflicted with one.

    Thanks, I might go the...
    https://www.hauppauge.com/
...route because I had one of their cards plugged into the motherboard
when I had an old computer.
I still have the VideoReDo and this is essential because the ads take
up typically 33% of the viewing/storage.

I've given up on recording for years now, watch streamed instead.
Only real downside is that they don't stay online forever but given
that I never did watch much more than once, thats no big deal and
with the stuff like Foyles War which is worth watching more than
    once, its mostly torrentable anyway

I still have the VideoReDo and this is essential because the ads take

No need for it when watching streamed. ulead strips all the ads on
    the commercial channels
