• Paypal requiring ID verification to continue account

    From Ozix@ozix@xizo.am to aus.legal on Thu Feb 19 09:04:37 2026
    From Newsgroup: aus.legal

I got e-mail from Paypal demanding I prove my ID. Supposedly this is due
to government requirements. I haven't heard anything about this.
Anyway I other forums, I saw that this can be triggered if fraudsters
tried to use your account. My account was linked to a cancelled credit
card just in case someone hacked the account. Maybe because of dud card,
    they could not verify me?

I've been screwed already by PayPal because I used a trading name
instead of my real one. No amount of pleading/images/receipts did
any good. Beware of these money-making sites, and ask if your bank
is just as good and simpler.
All these PayPals and similar are there to build up a nuisance value
so as to be bought out by the banks anyway.

None of them are, particularly if you get dudded
with a particular transaction and need a full refund

And I have had the same problem with StGeorge, now part
of Westpac which I have had an account with for more than
    50 fucking years, demanding I prove who I am. Which I can't
easily do now that I don't have a current driver's license, or
a birth certificate or passport. Head office keeps telling me
that all I need is the medicare card and service supplier
bills, but the local westpac office says that won't do.

No big deal giving that I am sick of the fuckers anyway
because every time they update the app which I use
touch ID to login for the stupid fuckers revert to
account number and password. I have only used
it as a desitination for the BHP/Woodside/Souths24

It is not. PayPal (what a stupid name) and similar are parallel pests
building up a nuisance value so as to be bought out by bigger
institutions. You are the product. It's a notorious business
    practice.

In the case of **PayPal**, the term youAre likely thinking of is:

    ## **Predatory Imitation**
    or
    ## **Copycat Strategy**
But more specifically in startup and tech circles, this is often

You will need umpteen receipts from Govt instrumentalities, past

All these things can only get worse, so you might want to notarize you fingerprints, mug shot, eye-scan, and include references (any you

    Varys with who wants it

Then about $300 for a new passport,

$422 now. Fuck that just to keep a bank account active
with a bank I had been planning to leave anyway. And
I won't need to prove my ID for most of the other ones
because I did that when I opened those accounts and
they paid me to open the account too.

with mugshots and facial recognition. Times
have changed and I did all this to avoid all the trouble you are
having now. Get wise! Be warned, NEVER let the passport expire.

Still costs you that stupid money to renew it every 10 years

    Not much though.

Yes it is, that changed this year

No big deal giving that I am sick of the fuckers anyway
because every time they update the app which I use
touch ID to login for the stupid fuckers revert to
account number and password. I have only used
it as a desitination for the BHP/Woodside/Souths24
share dividends and where I pay the council rates
and water bills from anyway so I have told them to
    go and fuck themselves

You can avoid and screw the system for a long time, but eventually it
    becomes not worthwhile.

Beware of these money-making sites, and ask if your bank
is just as good and simpler.

None of them are, particularly if you get dudded
with a particular transaction and need a full refund

Some creditCard scams are refunded; not all.

All of mine have been including the ones I knew were scams
which I used deliberately and got a full refund when they
delivered something else instead of what they said they
were going to supply but delivered something else

Also refunded the Australian newspaper scam which
offered a very cheap month which started to charge
after that month ran out, The fuckers had in the fine
print that you had to cancel a week before it started
to charge the normal fee and refused to cancel the
normal charge when I only cancelled the day before

    Wot! You still read NEWSPAPERS?

Nope, I only used it that time because
only that rag had the bit of info I wanted.

These outhouse accessories are barelyworth anything, even as fishwraps!

Which is why I haven't bothered with them for years now

PayPal was quite happy to cancel it anyway

I'll bet they're worried about all the scam refunds. They are going
    DOWN. Wait & see.

Who are you talking about ?

And I have had the same problem with StGeorge, now part
of Westpac which I have had an account with for more than
    50 fucking years, demanding I prove who I am. Which I can't
easily do now that I don't have a current driver's license, or
a birth certificate or passport. Head office keeps telling me
that all I need is the medicare card and service supplier
bills, but the local westpac office says that won't do.

Huh, I had a lot of trouble sacking Westpac and transferring
everything to NAB. My recorded signature had aged and didnot match the
present one. No-one in the bank recognized me.

I don't plan to cancel the StGeorge account,
it has no monthy fee, I will just stop using it.

That's when I needed the passport andORIGINAL (no copies) of the birth
    certificate.

I'd rather have all my teeth pulled than go thru that again!

Sensible people will have a birth certificate

In theory I do have, but finding it is just too much hassle

....until you need it; and get the original.

I don't have the ID stuff to get an another

You will need umpteen receipts from Govt instrumentalities, past
    documents, etc etc.

    Not with Qld now

You must have an old birth certificate somewhere.

I only ever had the one and its far from
clear if it got destroyed in a flood

    and old passports,

    Nope

and there must be be specialist lawyers handling all this.

Fuck that and what they charge

If you enter hospital (or an asylum) you have to
give them all sorts of data including a medicare card.

I do have a medicare card

unless, of course, you're an illegal ALIEN!

All these things can only get worse,

    That remains to be seen

so you might want to notarize you
    fingerprints, mug shot, eye-scan,

    No thanks

    and include references (any you
haven't scared off of course) ...

I do have a federal cop and GP
tho the GP almost died, ended
up in hospital for 6 months

    all as a backup.

I have survived to tell thee!

And while I didnt have any problem getting it decades
ago, now I don't have what is required to get another

    and passport,

Fuck that given the stupid fucking price of it and
presumably they wouldnt give me one now

Better to have it and not need it. Like money!

    Not at that stupid price

    and since
my passport had long expired it was necessary to jump thru endless
hoops and queues just to renew my birth certificate.

Birth certificates dont need to be renewed

But you do need the ORIGINAL one.

    Varys with who wants it

    No effort required

They don't even require a tax return anymore
