• Subaru Levorg report

    From Trevor Wilson@trevor@rageaudio.com.au to aus.cars on Thu Oct 1 10:06:51 2026

Well, the Levorg is now 9 years old.

    Nothing to report.

Nothing has gone wrong (except tyre blowouts, flat batteries).

I can still pack a shit-load of crap in the back.

Long term fuel consumption (70% city/30% country) sits at around
7.2L/100km (better than Subaru's quoted numbers)

I still enjoy driving it. It's still more fun than a basket of puppies.

I wonder if current Subarus are still quite decent?

I don't want to be like one of my mates. He bought a used Lexus (from a
Lexus dealer) and copped a 5 year warranty. He drove it for 5 years and
had zero problems. Then he 'upgraded' to a C Class Benz. Went back to
the dealer 6 times for the same fault. THEN he lines up to buy another
    Merc! What a boob.

the problem with upgrading to new models these days is technology
overload that many ppl don't want, especially older ppl. who wants to be trying to watch and operate a screen while trying to watch the road at
the same time, and scrolling thru a menu just to turn up the aircon,
rather than simply twisting a knob on the dash board?

Its not that long ago that any screen visible to the driver was
*illegal*. Wonder what happened to change that?? (Money?, manufacturer

Should *never* have changed for bloody *obvious* reasons. (felix`s

And they reckon phones (used as such, are dangerous and therefore
    *banned*) FFS!

**The replacement for the Levorg (WRX Sportswagon) is not too bad.
Plenty of physical controls on the steering wheel. Pity about the
removal of the excellent and intuitive air con controls in my Levorg
    though.

Using your logic we took our WRX to the dealer 4 times to get an AC
fault fixed and they couldn't fix it therefore all Subaru's are shit.
The problem is both cases appear related, fucking useless dealers.
BTW I fixed the AC fault myself, 5mins to Google to fault and find the
fix and 10mins to fix it.

Subaru comes in at #2. Merc, at #19.

    He was not happy.

the problem with upgrading to new models these days is technology
overload that many ppl don't want, especially older ppl.

I wont argue with this, BUT the best thing is to find a solution, rather
    than rail against it.

Going from a 2010 Navara to a 2021 Ranger was like going from an abacus
to a common day PC. All the stuff i was looking forward to, vs all the mindless useless stuff. The first thing i hated was the auto engine off.
The the door open alarm... and there were quite a few others.. software
called Forscan fixed the whole lot. Got to keep all the good bits, and
    cya to the useless shit.

We're not getting any younger, but how you handle new shit is up to you.
Me? My 5yo Ranga is now *perfect* for my needs. Wont be swapping it for something else anytime soon.

Which was the point, the problem was the dealer.

**No. The car had a clear and obvious fault. The dealer was never able
to fix it. Here's the thing: Mercedes is sold to the public as an
allegedly premium product, for which you pay around 30% more than I paid
for my Subaru for a similar Merc. It is, therefore, reasonable to expect
that the Mercedes is a superior product, sold and supported by a
superior dealer network. That is clearly NOT the case. Mercs are no
better than Subarus (Dollar for Dollar). In fact, AFAICT, they are
    inferior (reliability-wise).

Don't get me wrong: My first drive of a Merc was back in around 1976. A
    280 sedan. I was impressed. My next drive was ca. 1983. A 450SEL. A
massive lump of a thing. What an absolutely delightful thing to drive.
SO much better than any Falcadore at the time. By a very considerable
margin. Nimble, went PRECISELY where it was pointed and was luxurious
and very well appointed. I drove an XJS at the same time. Except for
that glorious V12, the Merc beat the Jag hands down. In every other
area. In the last decade I've driven a 500SL and a couple of C320k. Merc
have lost considerable ground. They're just not superior cars anymore. A
late model Commodore was a better drive. Mind you: That 500SL is a nice
    thing to look at.

Despite all that, Mercs are still far more expensive that superior cars
    from other manufacturers.

The dealer couldn't fix my AC problem either but I sorted it out in a
very short time so you can't be certain that it just wasn't an
incompetent dealer or more likely the way they are trained to do things, lateral thinking or thinking outside the box is not allowed and even
actively discouraged so even if the mechanic had a clue he isn't allowed
to fix something if it isn't done by the book.

Having owned 3 Subaru and 2 Mercedes I can't agree, the Mercs I have
owned have been as reliable as the Subarus and as good if not better to
drive but of course that is very subjective and also depends on the model.
