• How to add Microsoft Visual C++ 2010?

    From Wendelin Uez@wuez@online.de to alt.windows7.general on Sun Nov 9 16:15:55 2025

I want to install a new WIN7HP 32bit and additionally VC++2010 runtime to
run a specific test program but I have no Visual Studio licence.

WIN7 installation works all fine, even network access, but running
"Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 Service Pack 1 Redistributable Package MFC
Security Update" (vcredist_x86.exe) always fails and returns automatically something like "error on installation - canceled by user" although I didn't get an error message or didn't cancel.

vcredist_x86.exe is titled "Update"- is this a cumulative update or only a partial update? Doubleclikcing this exe starts checking files and seems to process a second installation progress bar completely before the final
    message is displayed.

If it is a NOT a cumulative update, where can I get the basic runtime? I cannot find it on MS site, and even ChatGPT always links to the "...update" titled exe only.

I am not sure this will help.

Installing Winamp 5.90 also installed Visual C++ Libraries 14.19.30139
(x32) on my system. You can get Winamp 5.92 at <https://support.winamp.com/winamp-desktop-player-for-windows>. I do
not know if this also contains the libraries. Note that Winamp is no
longer being maintained, and I have switched to WACUP and no longer
    archive Winamp versions.

    I got Visual C++ Libraries 14.0.24212 (x64) from a Windows 7 security
update around October 2019, on or before 11 October. While I have a
record of it being installed, I do not have a log or the installer file
in my archives. Thus, I cannot tell you the K#. This might have been a
push from Micro$oft, in which case you might already have the x32
version. Otherwise, you would have to seek it.

Some Republican officials have denounced the assassination
of Charlie Kirk as a conspiracy by liberal Democrats. Why
then is the attempted kidnapping of the Democrat governor
of Michigan, the shooting of a Democrat state senator of
Minnesota, and the assassination of the Democrat speaker
of the Minnesota state assembly not denounced as a
    conservative Republican conspiracy?

It should be this one: <https://download.microsoft.com/download/1/6/5/165255E7-1014-4D0A-B094-B6A430A6BFFC/vcredist_x86.exe>

While you can install things like this (which may be the item needed),
there are a few things that need to be done to Win7.

    https://www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/microsoft_visual_c_2010_redistributable.html

It should be patched up to Win7 SP1. If you started with a non-SP1 DVD,
you would need the Service Pack 1 file for the bitness of your OS (32-bit). Many of the items on the Microsoft site, will tell you "this only
works on Win7 SP1" and the vanilla version of Win7 is not supported.

The next step is installing the SHA2 signing patches.

The way that files are authenticated, as they come from Microsoft,
    that changed.

The packages might have been signed with a SHA1 or so.

Later, Microsoft decided to use SHA2 (SHA256, the same as Bitcoin calcs).
There were several KB which prepare a Win7 for SHA2 operation. Some
of the packages are signed with SHA1, the rest are SHA2.

    *******

I keep a USB stick with this on it.

    https://download.wsusoffline.net/

    "Modifications in version 11.9

NOTE: This version will be the last one supporting Windows 7 and Server 2008 (R2)
    "

That is a tool while downloads Security Updates but not Optional Updates
and keeps them in a folder. The installation script, installs items
in a particular order, so that additional items will be presented to
a "supportive environment". That means the SHA2 patching would be done
in an earlier stage than the 150 security updates.

Some of the utilities included in that package, could age out.
For example, the package script uses its own copy of "wget.exe"
to fetch https:// packages from a server. If the TLS version
were to change on the server end, the wget may not have the
    SSL/TLS library for it.

While Wsusoffline is a useful package, for making an "update stick"
for a new OS installation, the materials on the Microsoft server
can change or the server which serves the updates can change.

To give an example of that, if you install a brand new copy of
Vista SP2, it cannot be patched. At one time, the WSUSOffline recipe
for Vista was "perfect". They knew exactly which five KB had to be
installed first, so that the rest of the patches could install.
Today, the control file from Microsoft is SHA2 signed and
Vista was never given patches for that. This means the "spinning wheel"
while you wait for Windows Update to come back, it never stops.
And even insertion of your Vista collection on USB stick, you cannot tip
Vista SP2 upright. It must remain unpatched if Vista SP2 is
installed today. When the gigabyte sized control file is downloaded,
the signing is wrong for Vista to use it.

Never underestimate the effort it takes to patch one of their
out of date OSes. They know they are breaking things, so
for Microsoft, these are not surprise outcomes.

Some of the KB articles for Win7, only install if it is Win7 SP1.
That is why you would attempt to install Service Pack 1 before
some other things. Then, you would be looking for the
SHA2 materials as a next step. Having these assembled by the
WSUSOffline scripts, saves some effort for the user.
