I now have 2.9.15 and have just downloaded 3.0.4. Do I need to do
anything more complicated than just install the latter?

Are there any gotchas with the install? For instance, I think I
recall the spell checker has been changed. If true, does this mean I
will again have to start building up my custom dictionary from
scratch, or is there some way to import the old one?

    Thanks!

Do not uninstall 2.9 first. Install 3.0.4 and let it find and import
the 2.9 settings and dbases. It should pick up the custom words list,
but the paranoid can save a copy. I think the list is compatible with
both Hun- and MySpell. IIRC it is a simple text file. After everything
    works, you can uninstall 2.9.
