"Iran court upholds lashes sentence for singer who performed without hijab"

    Source: <https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/crn45ed1kqqgo>

The Iranian regime's ethics of decency aside, the number of lashes
awarded for this 'crime' piqued my curiosity. 74 lashes[1] is an odd
number for a court to award. On the assumption that these numbers can be
traced back to Quranic law, why '74'?

[ASIDE] Other curious numbers include 72 virgins in heaven (Martyr's
reward); /80/ lashes for those who accuse chaste women of adultery and
fail to produce /4/ witnesses. (The requirement of four witnesses
apparently provides psychological certainty and protects community
    honour.) etc...

[1] A fellow male musician said he was "willing to take 70 lashes in
Parastoo Ahmadi's place". What a hero! I wonder why he left her with the
    4 lashes?
