I can't even work out what the headline is trying to say.
This seems to be an entirely wishful thinking on the part of the editor
of /The Daily Beast/, and seems to be trying to use "thirsting" when re- ferring to lack of sexual gratification in a political context.

Perhaps I should improve on that rather dyspeptic answer.
A 'thirst for' something is a very strong desire - a thirst for
knowledge, for instance. I suppose that's the desired sense, though the expression doesn't work here, IMHO (the preposition 'over' is wrong, for
one thing). It smacks of desperation, of a hack headline writer turning
to the thesaurus in the hope of finding a new way to express an old idea.
I do hope it doesn't mean Donald has a crush on the man.

Eh? Do you have a concrete example of 'sexual gratification in a
political context' you want to share?

I think it refers to screwing the voters.

Or where the use of 'thirsting' comes from. Trumph doesn't say it in the >video statement.
[Meta question] Where does the Daily Beast come in the hierarchy of
news sources in the US? Above or below Fox News? How far down the barrel
does one have to scrape?

He could share Kash Patel's testimony about the FBI now accepting
applicants who have previously been involved in beastiality.
You might think I'm referring to an article in The Daily Beast or The
Onion, but this one's genuine news. In this administration, truth can
be stranger than fiction.

It definitely is intended to imply that Mr. Trump has a "man-crush" on
Mr. Mandani, not unlike his similar performances with Mr. Putin,
Mr. Kim, and Crown Prince Mohammed.

It seems at least partially successful in that it got the article talked about - something the content certainly did not warrant.
Bizarre word choice used as clickbait.
Now, "thirsting" as I've come to understand it, refers primarily to peo-
ple /thirsty/ for content made by sexually explicit entertainment crea-
tors, such as the women on 5ch.fun.

Well, I didn't. But maybe the editor did. I was trying to convey that
this usage of /thirsting/ is /not normal/, and that the editor of /The
Daily Beast/ is an idiot.
Best wishes, and happy voting in alt.usage. english!

You have come to understand poorly, as that is only one use of thirsting
as metaphor.-a It has been widely used, such as "thirsting for revenge" (something that there is evidence that Trump does), or "thirsting for
better movies".
Perhaps you've limited /your/ exposure too much, although you seem ready
to impugn an editor of that.

Sort of.-a I chose to comment exclusively on the word choice, and not the content.-a In return, a few users of alt.usage.english have now learned

Oh dear! I thought crushes were caused by capricious hormones in the
young. For an eighty-year-old to have them seems unhealthy.

That reminds me of my plan for ending the Iran war. It's quite simple.
Put Trump in a straitjacket, and gag him. Do not allow him to say a
single word until the negotiators have reached an agreement. Simples.
The catch, of course, is that sooner or later Trump will work out how to >remove the gag. Then the war will start again.

Silencing Trump would be effective, but Netanyahu needs to be straighjacketed too.

That was pretty clearly happening anyway.
Disparaging Netanyahu's actions is not disparaging Jewishness.
Criticism of a political leader is criticism of an individual's
action, is not necessarily criticism of the group of which that person
is a member.
