• word for leading development

    Hello!

I am looking for a word/phrase to express that a company is the leader
in a certain part and "dictates" others how stuff has to be done.

E.g. Google develops the Chrome browser and other either have to support
the same feature set or die out, as certain web services will not work.

    How is that called?

I am not searching the term monopoly, but a term to describe the
    "dictate" of the standards.

The phrase that comes to mind is 'to set the standard[s]'. Whoever
markets their product first sets the standards that others must
    implement or comply with.

    'Industry forerunner' or 'industry standard'.

Your example of Chrome/Google is a bad one. IBM used to be an industry standard. Where is it now?

'sideline' is the key word there. An 'IBM PC' used to be a tautology at
some stage, being the de facto standard PC. It is now in the care of a
    Chinese brand.

    That would be a bargain.

The selling price of a gorilla is between $15,000 to $50,000, and
it is illegal to own a pet gorilla in most countries due to their
    status as an endangered species.
