This is an interview CBS Miami did the other day. Sean seems to think
the old seasons were much harder.

He's not wrong. The shortened season alone makes a significant
difference. The challenges are also much more cerebral, with many more puzzle-solving elements and somewhat less of an emphasis on the brute
strength challenges that dominated the early seasons. In the early days
of the show they really tried to play up the pure survival aspect of
being stranded in the wilderness, whereas modern Survivor is much more
    of a competition or game.

The game is definitely different now compared to the old days. I
wouldn't say the shorter seasons are easier than the 39-day ones. The
game is way faster now. If you're not capable of making strategic
decisions on the fly, you're going to end up being an easy target or a
goat. I'd say the challenges are more balanced now and thus fairer. I
think this is a good thing. Another thing that makes the New Era game
harder is all of the randomness. Stuff like SITDs can save a player's
butt, but they can also end your game.
