I thought it was one of the worst opening episodes in recent memory, and
it really reminded me of those terrible seasons in the early 40s.-a None
of the players was interesting, none really stand out to me.-a There was really no one to root for and more than one to root against.-a I guess we can start to see why they didn't allow preseason interviews.-a These
people are really self-entitled and boring!
There was way too much Jeff talking about his stupid buzz phrase - what
was it, planned uncertainty, permanent uncertainty?-a I couldn't keep it straight in my mind, and I thought it was hilarious how even one or two players had trouble remembering it.-a If they had to have a two-word
phrase as the motto for the season, I think "Anything goes" would have
been better.
It was also really cringe when Jeff is hammering them about whether
anyone would want to get rid of idols or advantages, etc., or change the final four fire-making.-a Everyone knows how in love Jeff is with all
these gimmicks, so it wasn't likely he'd get a lot of push back after putting everyone on the spot.-a Aaliyah actually admitted in a post-game interview that they didn't show it but Jeff called her out for not
getting excited when he revealed the coin-toss gimmick.
This is probably the first opening episode for me since the early 40s
where after watching it, I probably can't remember a single name of any player other than maybe Jenna.

A few observations and impressions:
-Prior to the IC, it sounded like Probst was trying to settle some scores with the fans who have been vocal about preferring a simpler game
with fewer advantages and twists. Not a great moment for him IMO.
-What was up with all the histrionics from the players during the journey
to the beach? The boat was only about fifty metres off shore FFS!
-It was a shame that Patt found her pants :-). She bears an uncanny resemblance to a young Naomi Watts.
-DevinrCOs obsession with wanting to vote for Jenna because he didnrCOt believe that she was actually a wedding photographer was lame.
Fortunately, the rest of the tribe (with the exception of rCLlasagna girlrCY) made a better choice. The first TC is often a tough vote unless somebody really stands out as being an outsider. In this case, screwing up at the
IC is a valid reason to be booted.
-The lesbian took no prisoners in the thumb war. Poor Danny didnrCOt
stand a chance. :-)
-Best Suspension of Disbelief Moment: the kid who allegedly is a farmer
in Puerto Rico telling the cameraman, rCLLook around, thererCOs no one hererCY.
-Linnea the rCLentrepreneurrCY gets full marks for describing her business
in such a way that the uninformed viewer would have no idea as to
what she sells. :-)
-Oh good, another coin flip! Maybe Probst will bring back Mr. Beast
to help out. :-)
Did Jeff give any hints as to what powers the coin will have?
None

I still haven't watched and probably won't until tomorrow as BB28 is
nearing it's end and has been very good.
I'm not surprised that the first episode sucked. The near absence of any press availability was a dead giveaway that something was wrong. I'm
also not surprised that the cast sucked. I do wonder if the new people running Paramount asked for a different type of cast than we got for S45
to S49? If this cast is like the casts for S41 to S43 that's not good.
Jeff ODing on his own Kool-Aid doesn't surprise me. Did you see the last minute session Rob Cesternino got to do with Jeff at the live Survivor
event in NJ on Saturday? Rob asked a lot of good questions and Jeff gave
a lot of word salad answers. Does Jeff really believe the shit he says?
At the end they took some audience questions. The last one was from a
couple of young kids who wanted to know if Jeff thought Devens or Dee
could win BB28. After Rob filled Jeff in on what was happening, Jeff
goes off on how great Survivor casting is and how they test people for critical thinking skills. I don't recall ever hearing any past player
saying they were tested for critical thinking skills. Anyway, Jeff needs someone to check him occasionally to keep him in touch with reality.

Yes, he went on and on and on about it.
The succinct version is:
-one coin toss each season
-a winning toss adds a million dollars to the prize pot
-a winning flipper gets an immunity idol.
-a losing flipper is out of the game
-after losing tosses, prize money, in million dollar increments,
will be carried forward to future seasons
Wow! Watch there be a string of losing tosses until a Jeff fave returns
to make a $5 million winning toss.

I don't really follow BB, but I'm intrigued that Rick and Dee are still around, so I'll be skimming the last few episodes.-a So far, no one has
ever won both Survivor and BB, so if Dee can somehow go all the way,
that will be a big deal.
As far as I know, of the three big CBS reality shows, the only person
who has won two of the three is Jag, and he of course benefited from the fact that most of the teams on that season of TAR were previous BB winners.

Not even rCLwrestling guyrCY, or the kid who hired somebody from Reddit to teach him out to swim, or pantless Patt? It will take me weeks to learn
their names, but there were a fair number of characters who stood out
IMO. Except for the excessive rCLProbstspeakrCY and the excitable mental health counsellor, I enjoyed the episode.

I agree. I have adopted the habit of fast forwarding whenever I sense
a Probst rant beginning.

Yes, that was a really weird moment, with Probst putting the cast on
the spot in an attempt to settle some scores with the on-line Survivor community.
Aaliyah actually admitted in a post-game
interview that they didn't show it but Jeff called her out for not
getting excited when he revealed the coin-toss gimmick.
Probst was likely pleased with rCLmental health counsellorrCOsrCY
response to the announcement regarding the coin flip. The
guy went over-the-top apeshit.

At this point in the game, names are not important to me. Off the top
of my head, I've got Danny, Patt, and Jenna. But, going into E02, IrCOll
be able to recognize most of the faces.
