It's actually amazing after 25 years and some 750 contestants that the
most serious incident on the US show was probably Mike falling in the
fire, from which he was able to recover after plastic surgery since only
his hands were affected. We've also seen serious cases of heat stroke, infection, dehydration, broken limbs, parasites, torn Achilles, etc. but nothing comparable to loss of a limb. I guess it's a tribute to the
intense medical checks they do before season that despite the intense
physical demands and stress of the environment no one has ever suffered
a heart attack on the show.

It also bring into perspective again the near-disaster in Kenya where
wild animals got into the camp and came so close to the contestants.
One of the reasons I think they have now settled on the same location
every year (in addition to the favorable treatment they receive from the Fijian government) is that they know the area and have learned to
control it. But still it's probably a ticking clock to producers
knowing that sooner or later someone may die or suffer a really serious
injury that could effectively end the show.

What really stands out to me about this Survivor Greece story is that
the accident was caused by a tourist boat. Who's responsible for making
sure the playing area is sealed off from outsiders: the host nation or
the show? This was a totally preventable accident.

The US version of Survivor probably has the most safety protocols,
medical experts, etc. Yes, they've been lucky but they do seem to be
doing everything they can to ensure someone doesn't get seriously
injured or sick. The Fijian officials also deserve a lot of credit.

On a bit of a side note, here's an article from earlier this year that
gives some stats on how much the various TV shows that are shot in Fiji
pump into the Fijian economy each year. It's estimated Survivor injects
~USD $11 million each year. It also sounds like the locals are taking advantage of the opportunities to learn more about production, etc. so
they can get better jobs and even start their own companies.
