'Survivor' winner accused of not paying taxes now owes triple the prize

    Providence Journal
    March 27, 2026, 9:49 p.m. ET

More than a quarter century after he won the first season of "Survivor," Richard Hatch is still battling the federal government over taxes it
claims he failed to pay on his prize winnings.

Only now, the amount that the government claims the Rhode Island native
owes has, with penalties, ballooned to more than $3.2 million, well
beyond his original winnings total of about $1,010,000.

In its effort to get that money, the federal government won a judgment
against the reality TV star on March 17, but Hatch, acting as his own
lawyer, filed a notice two days later, on March 19, that he will appeal
to the United States Court of Appeals.

U.S. District Court Judge John M. McConnell, on March 17, ruled in a
civil case that Hatch owes the federal government more than $3,293,000
for his federal income tax liabilities. The final bill is likely to be
higher since it will include statutory additions from and after May 13,
    2024, including interest.

McConnell wrote that his final judgment allows the United States to
start to use the Federal Debt Collection Procedure to collect the payment.

Did Hatch give property to his sister to avoid paying?

The federal government has placed federal tax liens against two
properties it says Hatch owns in Newport. The government claims Hatch
deeded both properties to his sister, Kristen Hatch, to avoid having to
pay. It claims Kristen Hatch is "a mere nominee of Mr. Hatch, the true
and equitable owner of said property."

"Richard H. Hatch, Jr., transferred record title of the Real Properties
to Kristin M. Hatch with the actual intent to hinder, delay, or defraud
the creditors of Richard H. Hatch, Jr., including the United States, and
thus was fraudulent," the government said.

Hatch is appealing to the District Court's ruling, he confirmed via text
to The Providence Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. He said in the message that he's confident the appellate court's review will result in
    "a just outcome."

"I have spent 25 years trying to do the right thing, and I remain
committed to resolving this matter fairly," Hatch said.

    Who is Richard Hatch?

Hatch, 64, from Newport, Rhode Island, helped make "Survivor" the
biggest show on TV and whet the country's appetite for reality TV when
he outfoxed his fellow castaways in Borneo to win the first season in 2000.

Hatch's face and most of his body became recognizable across the country
since he famously spent much of his island time naked. Despite that
level of notoriety, the government claimed Hatch didn't claim his
"Survivor" winnings. He was convicted of tax evasion in January 2006.

In May 2006, Hatch was sentenced to 51 months in prison with three years
of supervised release. Hatch was also required to file amended income
tax returns for the 2000 and 2001 tax years and pay all taxes due those
years, but he failed to do so, according to the government.

After Hatch continued refusing to pay, the United States government
filed a civil complaint in U.S. District Court, Providence, in September
2022, requesting a judgment on unpaid federal income tax liabilities,
and enforcement of federal tax liens against two Newport properties the government said Hatch owned.

The sad saga of Richard Hatch continues to amaze me. He had this
wonderful legacy with the show as its first and still most famous
winner, and he could have come back several times and been just as much
a continuing presence on the show as Boston Rob, Sandra, Cirie and
others we have seen four or five times in repeat appearances.

He was pointedly and famously kept out of Game Changers, Winners at War,
S50, Australian Survivor vs. the World, and probably other seasons where
his history could have been celebrated. Through the sheer stupidity of
his tax evasion, his pathetic attempt to blame his non-payment on an
alleged and undocumented promise from Mark Burnett, his incessant
continuing nudity on the show (even when it made others uncomfortable)
and, of course, his disastrous literal brush up with Sue Hawk on his
second and final appearance, he has essentially just become a punchline
and a joke in many people's minds.

I wonder if we will ever get a really definitive and objective look at
    his life and his downfall.

If he had payed his taxes like everyone else he would have more than
made up the cost by being able to appear on all the seasons you
mentioned as well as other shows. Hatch on The Traitors would have been
    a given.

It is pathetic that he thinks CBS and SEG are responsible for paying the
taxes on his S1 winnings. Why would they do that and not for the other players? If there was such a deal it would be in writing.

Maybe one day someone will write a book about Hatch or about reality
stars who screwed up their lives after winning a significant amount of
    money.

It said he was representing himself so no need to pay lawyer fees.

made up the cost by being able to appear on all the seasons you
mentioned as well as other shows. Hatch on The Traitors would have been

Hell, just with an investment in the stock market he would easily have

It is pathetic that he thinks CBS and SEG are responsible for paying the >taxes on his S1 winnings. Why would they do that and not for the other >players? If there was such a deal it would be in writing.

Without it being in writing it doesn't matter what might have been
said between Hatch and Burnett. Hatch is more than smart enough to
know that is the case so I'm not sure what he hopes to accomplish by
continuing to fight the tax burden. If it were a few thousand dollars
it might be worth the fight in the hope that the government might
right it off but at three million dollars there's no chance the
government gives up the fight. Unless Hatch makes a big donation to
    Trump.

Maybe one day someone will write a book about Hatch or about reality
stars who screwed up their lives after winning a significant amount of >money.

Isn't that sort of a standard story for lottery winners, which should
include the game show winners. Though in Hatch's case it's clear that
this was an intentional decision on his part and not just spending the
    winnings on foolish items.

Though I do wonder what the value is of those items Hatch signed over
to his sister. Perhaps Hatch has found that he is able to multiply his
winnings enough that he finds it worthwhile to continue the fight with
the government even if he believes he will eventually lose the fight.

if his insistence on nudity was a true belief or a belief that it

That's a good question because at least one reality show in the late 90s
    - Real World - did indeed include some blurred out nudity. So was Hatch
smart enough to know that Survivor might do so too?

On the other hand, this was CBS - the high-class Tiffany network that,
as far as I can recall, had never really gone for even blurred out
nudity. That was much more likely the province of MTV or, among the
major networks, ABC which had famously showed explicit, non-blurred
nudity on shows like NYPD Blue. So did Hatch just get lucky (or
unlucky, depending on your perspective) with the nudity? Unknown.

It also just doesn't make sense that an experienced producer like
Burnett would even imply such a thing. I seriously sometimes wonder if
Hatch has or had some kind of mental disorder where he imagined or hallucinated MB making the promise. It is probably significant that at
least one judge in 2009 noted that Hatch appeared to need "mental health counseling" and ordered him to complete mental health programs as part
    of his supervised release.

I wonder if we will ever get a really definitive and objective look at

It said he was representing himself so no need to pay lawyer fees.

But you still pay court costs and filing fees, etc., and you often have
to pay opposing counsel's costs when you lose.

If he had payed his taxes like everyone else he would have more than
made up the cost by being able to appear on all the seasons you
mentioned as well as other shows. Hatch on The Traitors would have been
    a given.

Hell, just with an investment in the stock market he would easily have
been able to pay the taxes and still had plenty of money left over.

It is pathetic that he thinks CBS and SEG are responsible for paying the
taxes on his S1 winnings. Why would they do that and not for the other
players? If there was such a deal it would be in writing.

Without it being in writing it doesn't matter what might have been
said between Hatch and Burnett. Hatch is more than smart enough to
know that is the case so I'm not sure what he hopes to accomplish by continuing to fight the tax burden. If it were a few thousand dollars
it might be worth the fight in the hope that the government might
right it off but at three million dollars there's no chance the
government gives up the fight. Unless Hatch makes a big donation to
    Trump.

Maybe one day someone will write a book about Hatch or about reality
stars who screwed up their lives after winning a significant amount of
    money.

Isn't that sort of a standard story for lottery winners, which should
include the game show winners. Though in Hatch's case it's clear that
this was an intentional decision on his part and not just spending the winnings on foolish items.

Though I do wonder what the value is of those items Hatch signed over
to his sister. Perhaps Hatch has found that he is able to multiply his winnings enough that he finds it worthwhile to continue the fight with
the government even if he believes he will eventually lose the fight.

More than a quarter century after he won the first season of
"Survivor," Richard Hatch is still battling the federal government
over taxes it claims he failed to pay on his prize winnings.

After this much time you would think the government would have had a
final judgment and taken what they believe they are owed.

That's what I thought. How many times has Hatch appealed rulings?

McConnell wrote that his final judgment allows the United States to
start to use the Federal Debt Collection Procedure to collect the
    payment.

    Final after 25 years?

    No kidding!

Did Hatch give property to his sister to avoid paying?

The federal government has placed federal tax liens against two
properties it says Hatch owns in Newport. The government claims Hatch
deeded both properties to his sister, Kristen Hatch, to avoid having
to pay. It claims Kristen Hatch is "a mere nominee of Mr. Hatch, the
true and equitable owner of said property."

"Richard H. Hatch, Jr., transferred record title of the Real
Properties to Kristin M. Hatch with the actual intent to hinder,
delay, or defraud the creditors of Richard H. Hatch, Jr., including
the United States, and thus was fraudulent," the government said.

Hatch is appealing to the District Court's ruling, he confirmed via
text to The Providence Journal, part of the USA TODAY Network. He said >>>> in the message that he's confident the appellate court's review will
    result in "a just outcome."

    Ah, not quite final.

Too bad the article doesn't stat how many levels of appeal he has open
to him. Maybe he can run the clock out on this.

"I have spent 25 years trying to do the right thing, and I remain
committed to resolving this matter fairly," Hatch said.

    Who is Richard Hatch?

Hatch, 64, from Newport, Rhode Island, helped make "Survivor" the
biggest show on TV and whet the country's appetite for reality TV when >>>> he outfoxed his fellow castaways in Borneo to win the first season in
    2000.

Hatch's face and most of his body became recognizable across the
country since he famously spent much of his island time naked. Despite >>>> that level of notoriety, the government claimed Hatch didn't claim his >>>> "Survivor" winnings. He was convicted of tax evasion in January 2006.

In May 2006, Hatch was sentenced to 51 months in prison with three
years of supervised release. Hatch was also required to file amended
income tax returns for the 2000 and 2001 tax years and pay all taxes
due those years, but he failed to do so, according to the government.

There's a point at which fighting just isn't worth it.

After Hatch continued refusing to pay, the United States government
filed a civil complaint in U.S. District Court, Providence, in
September 2022, requesting a judgment on unpaid federal income tax
liabilities, and enforcement of federal tax liens against two Newport
properties the government said Hatch owned.

The sad saga of Richard Hatch continues to amaze me.-a He had this
wonderful legacy with the show as its first and still most famous
winner, and he could have come back several times and been just as much
a continuing presence on the show as Boston Rob, Sandra, Cirie and
others we have seen four or five times in repeat appearances.

Agreed, but Hatch screwed up his chances from the beginning. I wonder
if his insistence on nudity was a true belief or a belief that it
would draw the most attention from a TV audience.

He was pointedly and famously kept out of Game Changers, Winners at War, >>> S50, Australian Survivor vs. the World, and probably other seasons where >>> his history could have been celebrated.

Without documentation it doesn't matter what Burnett may have said to
    Hatch.

I wonder if we will ever get a really definitive and objective look at
    his life and his downfall.

I thought this had been taken care of years ago. Is his plan to drag
this out until he dies? Also, how is he paying to fight these court
cases? I'm surprised his sister isn't in legal trouble as she's clearly
part of the scheme for Hatch to not have to pay taxes on his S1 winnings.

It said he was representing himself so no need to pay lawyer fees.

I must have missed that. That might partly explain why this case has
    dragged on for 25 years.

If he had payed his taxes like everyone else he would have more than
made up the cost by being able to appear on all the seasons you
mentioned as well as other shows. Hatch on The Traitors would have been
    a given.

$3 million and probably rapidly growing. I can't see Trump helping him.
If he does, that would make it look like he believes Hatch over his
    buddy MB.

Most game show winners, especially in recent years, seem to be pretty
smart about how they handle their winnings.

Though I do wonder what the value is of those items Hatch signed over
to his sister. Perhaps Hatch has found that he is able to multiply his winnings enough that he finds it worthwhile to continue the fight with
the government even if he believes he will eventually lose the fight.

Interesting theory that makes a lot of sense. I wonder what's in it for
his sister? Wouldn't she have to at least pay property tax on the
properties? Over 20+(?) years that would be a significant amount of money.

More than a quarter century after he won the first season of
"Survivor," Richard Hatch is still battling the federal government
over taxes it claims he failed to pay on his prize winnings.

Only now, the amount that the government claims the Rhode Island
native owes has, with penalties, ballooned to more than $3.2 million,
well beyond his original winnings total of about $1,010,000.

In its effort to get that money, the federal government won a
judgment against the reality TV star on March 17, but Hatch, acting
as his own lawyer, filed a notice two days later, on March 19, that
he will appeal to the United States Court of Appeals.

U.S. District Court Judge John M. McConnell, on March 17, ruled in a
civil case that Hatch owes the federal government more than
$3,293,000 for his federal income tax liabilities. The final bill is
likely to be higher since it will include statutory additions from
and after May 13, 2024, including interest.

McConnell wrote that his final judgment allows the United States to

In addition to the seasons I listed, where he was clearly not invited, I should have mentioned the two returning player seasons where the show
actually invited Hatch to play and wanted him to play. The first was
Survivor 20, Heroes v Villains. Hatch was intended to be on the
villains tribe and how interesting it would have been to see his
interactions with the major villain whose name was so phonetically
similar to his own - Russell Hantz (same number of letters in first and
last name and the two last names almost rhyming). Alas, the courts had prevented him from leaving the country and would not make an exception.
He was apparently replaced by Randy Bailey.

A year later, Hatch claims he was invited to be on Redemption Island as
one of two returning players - the other was Russell Hantz! So we could
have again had Hatch and Hantz on the same season. But once again, he
was denied permission to leave the US, so he was replaced by Boston Rob
who famously won the season. How history might have changed if that
    had happened.

As a sort of consolation prize for not being able to appear on
Redemption Island, Burnett supposedly threw him a bone and booked him on
the fourth season of Celebrity Apprentice, which was filmed within the
US and where he was fifth to be fired.

It is pathetic that he thinks CBS and SEG are responsible for paying the taxes on his S1 winnings. Why would they do that and not for the other players? If there was such a deal it would be in writing.
