• [tor.exe+torrc] Things you do not learn from Braxman or Naomi...

    From Radio Eriwan@bounce.me@radio-eriwan.ru to alt.privacy.anon-server,alt.privacy,alt.cypherpunks on Thu Jan 15 01:26:16 2026

This might be interesting for QSL users too, assuming they have
also a torrc file for tor.exe, which includes the following two
    lines:

    ControlPort 9051 (OmniMix uses 9055)
    CookieAuthentication 1

For me this is an absolutely no go, because for anonymous communictaions,
with plain Mixmaster+socat, over the Tor Network it is *not* required or mandatory!!!

What do these two lines mean for an attacker?

If you have these two lines in your torrc and an attacker, who gained
somehow access to your PC, without your knowledge, can *hide* a small
program, maybe written in Assembler or C, on your PC, which will not
be detected from your AV software and which does the following:

For this example I use a Go program, which monitors *all* OmniMix inbound
and outbound traffic over the Tor Network.

But before I begin, I thought about the following issues:

Christian Danner, from Germany, I strongly assume, seems not up-to-date,
when it comes to OpenPGP usage... Why?

Let's assume you download OmniMix and want to verify his OmniMix installer.exe with GnuPG, well here we go:

    $ gpg --search-keys 0x69BB6BE8FEDB0B82FF4A2AFDCEC1C04FBFD92D29
    gpg: data source: https://keys.openpgp.org:443
gpg: key "0x69BB6BE8FEDB0B82FF4A2AFDCEC1C04FBFD92D29" not found on keyserver gpg: keyserver search failed: Not found

So I went to his homepage https://www.danner-net.de/, which was last updated *05/26/2018 23:29:08*!!!

    $ gpg --import danner.asc
gpg: key CEC1C04FBFD92D29: public key "Christian Danner <christian@danner-net.de>" imported

Christian Danner seems not been aware of that the majority of PGP users
upload their keys to Hagrid and his key does not bear any signatures from the WoT, or much better a Governikus sig3, which would tell GnuPG users that his public key *really, really* belongs to *him*.

He also seems not to participate here so that probably no one knows if he already received a gag order (a warrant canary is AFAIK not posted by him).

Ok, let's continue with the previously mentioned little Go program, called omon (OmniMix Monitor).

Firstly I started the freshly downloaded OmniMix 2.8.3 uno and then omon.

This is the output of one Mixmaster session, with OmniMix's standard settings:

OmniMix is pretty slow, compared to pure Mixmaster 3.1 with socat.exe + tor.exe,
and the output shows that an attacker can clearly see that your are sending the payloads to the Tor Network and TLAs can then do the rest, with the little Mixmaster
or YAMN network, if they like to do so.

Like I said before, these two lines in torrc are an absolutely no go and are *not* required for anonymous remailing!

My advice: Always use an up-to-date tor.exe, from the official Tor Project website,
do a hash of your otr.exe, put the hash in a safe place and sporadically look at
your torrc file that it does not contain these two lines.

Hope you find this article useful!

    Regards
    Stefan

P.S., why OmniMix includes two tor.exe, I don't know, but I do *not*
    recommend them...!!!

The 'Relay' protocol handles how encrypted data is packaged and sent

Forcing OmniMix to run with TBB is just life support for 2018 abandonwarerCopure therapeutic obstinacy.

It's like bolting a modern engine onto a rusting chassis, but the core
    code remains an unverified zombie.

This creates an unstable Frankenstein that offers nothing but a false
sense of security to the user.

    In true Microsoft style. :)

Stop abandonware ! (it's weerd to pronounce)

What you two contribute is much appreciated, however your selective
reading sometimes leaves a lot of room for "aw shits".

"Using the 'Host' location from the 'Config' tab, the 'Port' parameter at
the 'Control' tab is required to connect with Tor's control port in order
to send commands and retrieve status data, which then are displayed at the 'Tor' list. The Tor control port number of the OmniMix system defaults to 9055, as 9051 and 9151 are usually occupied by a standard Tor installation resp. the Tor Browser. Shut down Tor before changing the port number.

To protect Tor's control port from unauthorized access there are two authentication methods, both supported by OmniMix. Switching between them requires editing the 'torrc' configuration file manually.

If you intend to control Tor from different computers, 'Password' authentication would be the right choice. At the 'ConTor' tab select 'Password' authentication and enter your password, e.g. 'my_password'. Be aware, that leading and trailing spaces are relevant! Then at the command prompt within the Tor directory calculate the hash value for the chosen password with the command
    g:\Programs\OmniMix\tor>tor --hash-password my_password
Oct 06 22:36:45.707 [notice] Tor v0.1.1.23. This is experimental software.
Do not rely on it for strong anonymity. 16:56DDB73813D8F525606245C49111696B791B87D7DCEFF575083DB78D31

Finally, to enable Tor to check, whether the sent password is correct, add
the 'HashedControlPassword' option with the resulting hash code to the
    'torrc' file
    HashedControlPassword 16:56DDB73813D8F525606245C49111696B791B87D7DCEFF575083DB78D31

The alternative to a constant password would be the 'Cookie'
authentication method, where at each launch Tor generates a file named 'control_auth_cookie' anew within its data directory containing 32 random bytes. Those bytes then have to be read by the controller application in
order to use them for authentication. That's why apart from the activation
    of that method by adding
    CookieAuthentication 1

to the 'torrc' file, the location of this file has to be set by means of
    the 'Cookie' file selector.

Cookie authentication, which usually is limited to local controllers, as
it requires access to a file in Tor's data folder, is the default method
when using the OmniMix system's Tor instance."

    -*-
    TCP 127.0.0.1:9055
Good luck getting to 9055 from outside a firewall, and if you should so
happen to, let us know how you got a host system, router, switch or
firewall to route 127.0.0.1. We'll all want to hear that.

authentication method, where at each launch Tor generates a file named 'control_auth_cookie' anew within its data directory containing 32 random bytes. Those bytes then have to be read by the controller application in order to use them for authentication. That's why apart from the activation of that method by adding
    CookieAuthentication 1

to the 'torrc' file, the location of this file has to be set by means of
    the 'Cookie' file selector.

Cookie authentication, which usually is limited to local controllers, as
it requires access to a file in Tor's data folder, is the default method when using the OmniMix system's Tor instance."

    -*-
    TCP 127.0.0.1:9055
Good luck getting to 9055 from outside a firewall, and if you should so happen to, let us know how you got a host system, router, switch or
firewall to route 127.0.0.1. We'll all want to hear that.

Can you please explain in laymens terms, so that every remailer client
user understands, why for anonymous email or usenet communications the
Control Port with a cookie must be set in OmniMix?

When you try that with Tor Browser Bundle, the Browser will no longer
work. When you use plain vanilla Mixmaster 3.1 from Richard, or YAMN
as a patched and secure version, you never ever need to set the Port
in torrc when using socat.exe (and for Mixmaster also stunnel.exe) with
    an official tor.exe from torproject.org.

Openening the Control Port on a Tor Hidden Service may makes sense, when
you like to give access to it only for family, friends and co-workers, but absolutely *not* for a remailer *client*, because of the threat I outlined before.

The logs clearly show that leaving ControlPort open is a huge privacy
fail, letting any local app spy on your connections and windows average
users usually have lots of them.

It's also 'super-chiant' that OmniMix ships with an ancient, modified
Tor version instead of the official one.

OM users disable control port in your torrc, compri ?

omon is updated now with an IMHO better log output:

What you two contribute is much appreciated, however your selective
reading sometimes leaves a lot of room for "aw shits".

Stefan's demonstration wasn't about an external attacker bypassing a
firewall to reach 127.0.0.1 from the internet. Obviously, that is not routable.

The point was about local surveillance (malware/trojans residing on the
host machine). If a malicious script runs on your PC (as the user), it
    has access to localhost.

Regarding the manual's "Cookie Authentication": Stefan's log explicitly
showed [Authenticated with cookie: ...\control_auth_cookie]. This proves
that a local program can simply read the cookie file from the disk and authenticate itself to the ControlPort, rendering that protection
    useless against local threats.

The danger comes from inside the house, not from the router.

The logs clearly show that leaving ControlPort open is a huge privacy
fail, letting any local app spy on your connections and windows average users usually have lots of them.

It's also 'super-chiant' that OmniMix ships with an ancient, modified
Tor version instead of the official one.

OM users disable control port in your torrc, compri ?

What is also interesting with all the logs, (maybe I am blind) that I do not see any connections to the pinger services via Tor, compared to my patched yamn+yamn-proxy(yp)

So the question is does OmniMix, with standard settings, does pings via clearnet
or must an OmniMix user set pinging via Tor somewhere in the UI? Or do I have to start omon real quick, after OmniMix start?

    For comparison:

The logs clearly show that leaving ControlPort open is a huge
privacy fail, letting any local app spy on your connections and
windows average users usually have lots of them.

It's also 'super-chiant' that OmniMix ships with an ancient,
modified Tor version instead of the official one.

OM users disable control port in your torrc, compri ?

What you two contribute is much appreciated, however your selective
reading sometimes leaves a lot of room for "aw shits".

"Using the 'Host' location from the 'Config' tab, the 'Port'
parameter at the 'Control' tab is required to connect with Tor's
control port in order to send commands and retrieve status data,
which then are displayed at the 'Tor' list. The Tor control port
number of the OmniMix system defaults to 9055, as 9051 and 9151 are
usually occupied by a standard Tor installation resp. the Tor
Browser. Shut down Tor before changing the port number.

To protect Tor's control port from unauthorized access there are two
authentication methods, both supported by OmniMix. Switching between
them requires editing the 'torrc' configuration file manually.

If you intend to control Tor from different computers, 'Password'
authentication would be the right choice. At the 'ConTor' tab select
'Password' authentication and enter your password, e.g.
'my_password'. Be aware, that leading and trailing spaces are
relevant! Then at the command prompt within the Tor directory
calculate the hash value for the chosen password with the command
    g:\Programs\OmniMix\tor>tor --hash-password my_password
Oct 06 22:36:45.707 [notice] Tor v0.1.1.23. This is experimental
software. Do not rely on it for strong anonymity.
    16:56DDB73813D8F525606245C49111696B791B87D7DCEFF575083DB78D31

Finally, to enable Tor to check, whether the sent password is
correct, add the 'HashedControlPassword' option with the resulting
hash code to the 'torrc' file
    HashedControlPassword
    16:56DDB73813D8F525606245C49111696B791B87D7DCEFF575083DB78D31

The alternative to a constant password would be the 'Cookie'
authentication method, where at each launch Tor generates a file
named 'control_auth_cookie' anew within its data directory containing
32 random bytes. Those bytes then have to be read by the controller
application in order to use them for authentication. That's why apart
from the activation of that method by adding
    CookieAuthentication 1

to the 'torrc' file, the location of this file has to be set by means
    of the 'Cookie' file selector.

Cookie authentication, which usually is limited to local controllers,
as it requires access to a file in Tor's data folder, is the default
method when using the OmniMix system's Tor instance."

    -*-
    TCP 127.0.0.1:9055
Good luck getting to 9055 from outside a firewall, and if you should
so happen to, let us know how you got a host system, router, switch
or firewall to route 127.0.0.1. We'll all want to hear that.

Can you please explain in laymens terms, so that every remailer client
user understands, why for anonymous email or usenet communications the Control Port with a cookie must be set in OmniMix?

    In simple terms, it doesn't.

    https://www.danner-net.de/omom/tutortorconfig.htm

If you really have a grasp how Tor works, you can expand on that.

When you try that with Tor Browser Bundle, the Browser will no longer
work. When you use plain vanilla Mixmaster 3.1 from Richard, or YAMN
as a patched and secure version, you never ever need to set the Port
in torrc when using socat.exe (and for Mixmaster also stunnel.exe)
with an official tor.exe from torproject.org.

Two different applications, each with their own specialties.

Stay on track, the conversation refers to you and Gabx slamming OmniMix,
not Tor browser. There's litte difference when using OmniMix as a Tor
source with a decent browser (Not Chrome or "MS-Chrome") and Tor
    browser.

Openening the Control Port on a Tor Hidden Service may makes sense,
when you like to give access to it only for family, friends and
co-workers, but absolutely *not* for a remailer *client*, because of
    the threat I outlined before.

You did a cherry pick for something that can't occur directly from an
external source. I can do exactly what you did with a number of
applications. Don't set yourself up for ridicule and do stupid shit.
    You're better than that.

Stefan's demonstration wasn't about an external attacker bypassing a firewall to reach 127.0.0.1 from the internet. Obviously, that is not routable.

The point was about local surveillance (malware/trojans residing on the
host machine). If a malicious script runs on your PC (as the user), it
    has access to localhost.

The odds of that occuring are extraordinarily low. No malware gives a
hoot about anonymous remailers - not enough processing resources,
bandwidth, and too slow. It's much easier to leverage publicly accessible smtp servers, or unsecured wireless equipment.

Regarding the manual's "Cookie Authentication": Stefan's log explicitly showed [Authenticated with cookie: ...\control_auth_cookie]. This proves that a local program can simply read the cookie file from the disk and authenticate itself to the ControlPort, rendering that protection
    useless against local threats.

Let's be real about this, "local program". An exploit of similar scope
can be done to any Linux, Windows, AIX, Solaris, or HP-UX server with the
same access. The example, while worthy, really just proves the
    application bundle works as designed.

The danger comes from inside the house, not from the router.

Danger inside is the responsibility of the host operator to protect
against. Do stupid things with the system you use for anonymity purposes,
    pay the price.

Thank you both for your contributions.

Correct and it cleary shows, when mentioning Tor Browser or other Tor apps
that it is not required and in Tor Browser not allowed, to use the port...

If OmniMix users feel safe to use a patched tor.exe (or two) with the port
open and a set cookie, so it be, while all others enjoy, for best security practices, to stay with the *original* tor.exe and no Control Port open...

Later today I will release omon v0.1.0 on GitHub, so that Tor users
can play around with it. omon allows now via a .json file, in the
current directory, to set multiple entries for the cookie path and port.

Tested under Windows and Linux and it works fine.
