    Donald Trump's brand-new gold-colored $1 coin sparked chaos
at the US Mint as a record rush of buyers overwhelmed its
website and left customers stuck in massive virtual queues.

The Treasury Department made the coin available on Wednesday
as part of the nation's 250th anniversary celebration.

A portrait of Trump's face is featured on the front of the
coin with the inscriptions 'Liberty,' 'In God We Trust',
    and '1776 ~ 2026.'

Despite not being released into general circulation, the
Philadelphia-minted coins are legal tender and can be spent
    like any other US currency.

The government is selling the coin in collector bundles of 25
or 100 per bag, ranging from $61 to $154. Each coin is priced
at a markup of more than 50 percent above their actual value.

Online shoppers are being forced to wait upwards of an hour
to even access the US mint's webpage in order to purchase
    the coins.

    . . .

Looks like Trump is more popular than the MSM 'polls'
    would have us believe.

There was another dollar coin some years back that
also had gold coloring - alas if you left it in
your pocket for a week or two the 'gold' would
corrode away. The PRACTICAL coating would be
titanium nitride - but that'd be far too expensive
    for a one-dollar coin.

In theory plastic coins could be made cheap, even
embed some 'hologram' strip to make 'em difficult
to fake. I thought the EU made some but, checking,
they'd been discussed but never made.

Coins still have a number of uses, but as we have
seen the metal ones tend to cost more to make than
they are worth. Also nobody wants a $20 coin because
they're too likely to fall out that little hole in
    your pocket.

Anyway, a 250 year celebratory coin, that's legal
currency, is clearly going to be a collectable.
Trump on the front, even better :-)

DID see a pic of his proposed $250 bill. His image
looked awful, scary, more a photo-copy than the
good-old hand-etched portrait bills. However, if
any are produced, they WILL sell out fast.

Even if the actual Trump can be a bit 'confounding'
sometimes, America still loves the IDEA of Trump.

Just because the US Mint's server slowed down? "While some websites can
manage thousands of users simultaneously, others might struggle with
    just a few hundred."

No one disputes there are enough wayward Orange Cult members still out
there to crash a website that only gets normal traffic.

We need to see how many coins were sold in the end which they'll
    probably lie about.

One thing's for sure -- Trump is going to be a distant memory by the
time a novelty coin like this is going to be worth anything to serious collectors.
