Massachusetts' highest court ruled that two statues depicting
saints cannot be displayed at a public safety building in
    Quincy.

The Massachusetts Supreme Judicial Court on Thursday unanimously
ruled 7-0 to prohibit the city of Quincy, located near Boston,
from displaying the statues outside a police and fire complex.

The court also ruled against the city's attempts to dismiss a
lawsuit filed by residents who sought to permanently stop the
statues from being installed, The New York Times reported.

Quincy Mayor Thomas Koch, a Catholic, had spent nearly $1
million on the plan for the statues, according to the Times.

The court wrote in its opinion that the statues "have a
greater potential to be perceived as government endorsement
of a particular religion, and subordination of other
    religions."

The statues "are not part of a larger collection of statues
and monuments that includes nonreligious ones, or statues
of figures of particular importance to other religions,"
    the judges ruled.

    . . .

On the whole, I agree. DO try to keep State and Church
    separate.

HOWEVER ... if it'd been native "totem poles" or Hindu
gods, how would this court have ruled ? Just wondering.

Deliberate EXCLUSION of a particular religion is just
as bad as exclusive PROMOTION of a particular religion.

Religion is religion, none should be endorsed
    by the public.

We have to fight this battel every December
when Christian groups want to put up manger scenes
    in public parks.

That, and the holy war against red coffee cups.
