Couple Accused of Stealing, Selling $6K in Library Books
An Arizona couple faces felony charges for allegedly stealing
thousands of dollars' worth of books after checking them out
from the Mesa Public Library and reselling hundreds of them
to a secondhand bookstore, police said.
Ian Bartlett, 36, and Athena Bartlett, 33, were arrested Monday
at the library after employees spotted them and contacted
police, ABC News reported.
Police said the couple accumulated more than $6,200 in unreturned
books through two library accounts associated with Ian Bartlett.
Athena Bartlett sold 423 books to a Half Price Books location
during five visits over an eight-day period in May, according
to police.
The investigation began after employees at a secondhand
bookstore noticed Mesa Public Library labels on books the
couple brought in and declined to buy them. The store then
alerted the library.
Library employees traced the books to an account associated
with Ian Bartlett, according to police.
