BRADENTON, Fla. (WFLA) rCo First responders worked to evacuate
and relocate over 150 residents after the roof of an Assisted
Living Facility partially collapsed Saturday evening.
According to Manatee County officials, crews evacuated and
relocated 157 residents from Aviata at Bradenton Villas,
located at 105 15th St. E. in Bradenton.
Bradenton Mayor Gene Brown told 8 On Your Side that the
collapse happened in the cafeteria, which was unoccupied
at the time of the incident.
Transportation and alternate accommodations were arranged
for the affected residents, who were taken to other
facilities. Some residents went home with loved ones.
. . .
Note that the Tampa/Bradenton area had received
torrential rains the past week due to effects
from TS Bertha. This would have put large strains
on the roof - which in Florida commercial buildings
tend to be flat or nearly so. Water is HEAVY.
The hurricane last year would have also stressed
the roof. Stress then more stress and ...
In any case, an hour or two diff and this would
have been a mass-casualty event. Not like old
people can just dive out of the way of falling
beams.
This is a cycle of bad weather most everywhere.
Building standards, and reinforcment of existing
buildings, is IMPORTANT. Wanna send yer kiddies
to school, just to have the roof or walls pancake
down on them ? NOT good !
Yea, 'robust' construction COSTS a little more.
Money WELL spent.
LONG LONG back when I was in 4th grade they were
adding a new wing to the public school. Slab, then
'curtain' walls of bricks in a concrete 'frame'.
One day there was a big noise and lots of shouting
and lots of sirens ... a large section of wall had
fallen over on a bunch of workers - we all saw.
The walls were basically un-supported, the only
strength was in the COMPLETED structure where
everything was braced by everything else. STUPID !
And they use such buildings as storm shelters ...
