. . .
78 ???
I live much further south - hot and steamy - and
keep my A/C set at about 81. Good enough and saves
lots of kilowatts.
Admittedly, the 'northeast' is used to much lower
temperatures. "Room temperature" is like 68. That'd
be COLD in my part of the world, put on the fuzzies.
Some news gal today said she kept her A/C at 65.
THIS is what she found 'comfortable' - but she
IS a Yankee.
If there is really "global warming" that's gonna
last or get worse then the Yankees had better get
adapted until 81 feels good enough. Otherwise they
will burn through MASS quantities of energy just
trying not to sweat to death.
BTW, the humidity is worse than the temperature.
Suggest adding a 'dehumidify' function to all
A/C units ... JUST enough micro-cooling to
drop the humidity 25 or 30 points but NOT the
amount of energy to literally cool all the bulk
air down to 65. It's cheaper/easier to make
all-or-nothing HVAC units of course, but this
is not the WISE paradigm.
Oh well, Mamdani is running NYC into the sewer,
it's all gonna fall apart and he doesn't have
enough 'rich' people to rob (and even they
don't have enough to float his promised brand
of 'socialism', that's the old old Big Lie
idiots STILL fall for)
Socialism/communism - think those nasty grey
Soviet apartment blocks with one shitter per
floor and people standing in the ration lines
all fuckin' day for a few little packages.
That's the long-proven reality.
BTW, Did look into, actually bought some, 'solid
state' thermoelectric (Peltier) chips. Alas the
efficiency is FOR SHIT - like 14 volts at 4 amps DC
per chip and the chips are only about an inch square.
NOT a solution alas. Too bad, but that's physics.
Tried to make a tiny mini-fridge ... big heat sinks ...
out of a small camp cooler box. NO good. Some variant
of liquid/gas refrigeration works far better - but the
compressor tech COULD be improved (ultrasound waves?)
News today, France, window A/C units are suddenly all
the rage. Anyone who CAN afford them ARE getting them.
Alas I doubt the electric grid can SUPPORT all these
new things. Not sure if there are enough 'window' A/C
units in stock to cope with the demand either - expect
massive prices and maybe literal consumer wars at the
retail outlets. The low-end, 5000btu, window units are
CRAP too, cheapest possible stuff. Gotta go 6000+ to
start to get something decent that'll last a few years
and won't burn mass electricity for the cooling factor.
Have an old 6500btu window unit, set high in a hole in
the wall. It finally went bad. Too old now to lift a
new one up there without seriously damaging myself and
don't trust 'handyman' biz people much anymore.
May need to replace my 'heat pump' central with a more
traditional 2-box setup soon ... NOT great ... will
need an electrician to install a 150 amp secondary
circuit box with two breakers. $$$UCKS !!! Old 1950s
pillbox house - NOT new-wiring friendly - but would
take a nuke or F3 to crack it. Also don't want to put
big $$$ into an OLD property. In my will is a note to
heirs to tear the whole thing down, build the ground
up a foot or so, and start again.
Just sayin'
If the two boxes had STAGGERED starts, even five seconds
apart, then I wouldn't need so big a circuit. Can't find
that for some reason .....
BTW, 'start again', modern concrete is CRAP - starts
to disintegrate the day after it's poured. Something
like the old Roman concrete - there ARE suppliers -
but it's very $$$. Also, white pine+gypsum "walls",
just SO depressing and the termites will rule.
The OLD OLD family house was (real) 2x12s and bigger
deep soaked in creosote oil. Mom said it only took
about 15 years for the smell to go away. BUT - kinda
indestructible. Bugs couldn't eat it and didn't rot.
(Oh 'carcinogenic', Mom lived well to 100+)
How do you put a full concrete ultra-strong house up
on pilings ? Tried to look it up but there wasn't
much for residential structures, just like parking
garages. The goal is something that's pretty much
F2/Cat-3 resistant and just high enough not to flood.
But ... property crunch ... TOO expensive now to build
anything new. Bummer !
Gen-A2 - Soviet-style apt 'housing' with one shitter
per floor. This seems to be what they want - and after
they destroy the economy that's what they'll get.
Hope they like standing in the ration lines all day ...
Oh well, too much ..........
