Starting small, here's three. And, yes, I'm starting
with Cryptids and aliens, both of whom I frequently
    see grouped under "Paranormal."

Feel free to add to or dispute my ever so humble
    offerings below.

    #1. Bigfoot.

If Bigfoot existed it would have to have existed for
a very long time. So it's not just a matter of having
zero specimens today, not even rotting body parts, there
are none from the fossil record. There are none amongst
cave finds. There are none retrieved from tar pits.

    There are none.

There are cryptids that have turned out to be real, and
they all follow the exact same pattern: The existed where
modern, scientific people where not. And just as soon as
modern, scientific people reached where they could be
found, all the evidence that exists for typical species
    was found for them.

    One example: The Coelacanth

    Another example: The Bili Ape

Bigfoot does not match this pattern. Bigfoot matches the
pattern of a myth. Which is to say, Bigfoot is found where
modern people ARE, and there's still zero evidence.

    #2. Kenneth Arnold's Flying Saucers

So the military announced that a plane had crashed and
there was a hefty reward for anyone who overflew the
area and spotted it. This lured Kenneth Arnold to the
site and, behold, the legend of the "Flying Saucer" was
    born!

    This screams "Secret Test."

The military was testing some new technology, and of
course they could NEVER test it on enemies, that would
just tip them off. And you didn't even want to conduct
your tests on allies, because then you lose control of
the narrative and maybe even the technology, if
something goes wrong. So you want to test it on your
own people. And to be a real test they can't know it's
a test. So you lure unsuspecting pilots to a specific
location, somewhere accessible enough to reach and
remote enough to know who's coming, and then you spring
    your test on them.

    What where they testing?

Does it matter? Once we know it was the military itself
drawing unsuspecting pilots to the location, do we honestly
have to know every little detail?

If you can't accept reality without further details then
I'd say that, from Arnold's description, he was looking
    at decoys.

Our primary delivery system for weapons against the
Russians, or anyone, was the plane. And planes are
troublesome in that enemies often try to shoot them down.
So one potential solution looked at would be decoys.

From Arnold's description, these were far less drone-like
    than kite-like.

Could it also have been a formation of flying wings? Yes.

Did the U.S. ever possess an entire formation of flying
wings before the modern fly-by-wire era? We certainly
did build and test them, but a formation of them?

Flying wings were and are notoriously unstable. With the
advent of fly-by-wire though, computers can make adjustments
thousands of times faster than humans -- and make thousands
of times more adjustments -- making an unstable plane quite
stable. But in Kenneth Arnolds day there was no fly-by-wire
so if he encountered a flying wing, or a number of them,
they would have likely wobbled their way through the air.

But I'm thinking the decoy explanation is the more likely...

    #3. Roswell

The source of Roswell is the military. The story came from
    the military.

Like in the case of Kenneth Arnold, I would guess that
something did crash at Roswell, and it was most likely
another test -- one that the nearby base was in the dark
about -- or it was a crashed spy balloon from a foreign
nation. Either way, cue the coverup!

So the local base is totally in the dark, they don't know
that anyone sent any spy tech towards them, and they find
this thing that crashed... they even announce it! But then..

But then one of two things happened. And they were...

    A) The Pentagon bitched slapped them for making any kind
of announcement, tipping off the world about their secret
    test.

    B) The Pentagon bitched slapped them for making any kind
of announcement, tipping off foreign powers that we had
    recovered their spy tech.

We don't want them to know what we know!

There is another possibility, and that it that there was
never any recovered anything. That, the military made it
up, possibly as "Plausible Deniability" for tech they had
either sent over Russia or were planning on sending over
    Russia.

Some people might actually find that the more likely
explanation -- disinformation -- especially coming on
the heels of Kenneth Arnold's sighting of a "Flying
Saucer." It's effectively stating "Whatever these things
are, they're not ours!" When in fact they are.

A poster child for Dunning-Kreuger theory if ever there was one.

I have not been in USENET since the 90s so I am pretty happy to be here. I installed Alpine and decided to add Newsgroups to the install as well.
Great to be back but there's a lot of chaff. Recommend any groups?

alt.buddha.short.fat.guy has a fair bit of discussion,
much of it political and only a little about Buddha
or Buddhism. Some but not all of the regular
    posters are Buddhists.

rec.arts.tv and talk.politics.misc are fairly high traffic.

alt.atheism is not as high traffic as it used to be.

    What are your interests?

If it's unreasonable, inappropriate then why didn't you
attack it's use, or at least question it?

And, seriously, you couldn't have just Googled a
definition then tried to twist & misrepresent it into

    "Spacious?"

Be specific. Within the context of this very thread,
what was being called "Spacious" and why?
