• Remember that time I asked for evidence that atheists exist?

I used to waste a great deal of time -- a LOT of time -- trying
to raise the level of discourse.

    So here's one thread...

    https://groups.google.com/g/alt.atheism/c/4-VWXUs18WQ/m/RMa6hdOuBQAJ

And it was simple. It went like this:

Post any evidence you have for the existence of one or more atheists
but, only evidence of a sort that you would accept coming from
    anyone else, including a theist.

    That's it.

Restricting yourself ONLY to forms of evidence you accept from those
you are arguing against, present evidence for the existence of one
    or more atheists.

My point of course was that the only "Evidence" for the existence
of atheists would be personal testimony -- self reports -- and that
is precisely what self-identified atheists EXCLUDE!

It didn't work. Nobody saw their error. Nobody glimpsed themselves
as the rest of the world sees them.

And the real irony here? Theists aren't limited to self reports.
But they were just as blind to this fact as they were to themselves.

For what? I am an agnostic atheist:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Agnostic_atheism

    From the article:

"In this usage, an agnostic atheist does not believe that any deity
exists, but also does not claim to know that no deity exists, or holds
that the existence or nonexistence of deities is unknown or unknowable."

What is 'idiotic' about the above?

What do you mean by "Beat?"

Let's focus on this one, then! Here it is:

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Integer_factorization_records

I remember, on numerous occasions, reading & hearing news articles &
stories that said, "Encryption is dead", because, here soon, quantum
computing will reach a point where it can break encryption keys. I was
not a believer then, and I am not a believer now; in fact, I have never
been a believer in quantum computers doing anything in the way of
    significant, meaning computation.

And, so, I think that on this one at least, the mainstream media got it
wrong! Ditto for AI; it's not doing anything in the way of
"significant" damage, other than automating tasks that should be
automated, and such has been going on for a long time now, hasn't it?! Likewise, Bill Gates is wrong when he blabbers on about AI being some
sort of "existential threat" to Humanity, which it is most certainly not!

As for nuclear fusion being a source of very cheap, reusable energy, the mainstream media is also wrong; in that area of research the joke has
been, "It's only 30 years away," but I think that the experts in that
area are using "40" instead of "30" these days.

    Dawn

P.S. I am not a so-called "futurist"; many atheists here will disagree
with me on this one, and that is fine to have different opinions on
things! Time will tell, of course!!

P.P.S. The mainstream media is almost entirely "believers", albeit, the liberal branches of Protestant and Catholic Christianity.

Dunning-Kruger Effect: Ignorance and Overconfidence Affect Intuitive Thinking, New Study Says
    The Debrief, 13 Apr 2021
In a newly published study, researchers say the Dunning-Kruger Effect
can cause low-performers to overestimate their judgments during the
    intuitive decision-making process.
According to the study published in the journal Frontiers in
Psychology on April 8, 2021, researchers found that persons with the
highest number of errors demonstrated the highest degree of
miscalibration, or overconfidence, in their actual performance on the
    cognitive reflection test.

Yep, already read it. They haven't cracked a significant RSA key; here

    Surely a cheap magic trick.

The amusing thing is, the 2 best theories Science has
at present -- Relativity and Quantum Theory -- both point in
the direction the universe is some kind of construct and
humans and other minds are just visitors.

It seems agnosticism is sane but atheism is about to develop a heap of problems, underlining the basic idea that proving the negative is
logically fraught and probably should not be attempted by
    non-mathematicians. :)

I've been banging on about the implications of physics on USENET for
some time and am heartened the staff has been taken up by other more
serious scientists. Again, scanning the headlines in the science mags
    is always illuminating.

Briefly, Relativity treats time as "just another dimension". And
Bloch has pointed out this implies the universe is a frozen fish-tank
in much the same way as an XY graph is possibly a representation of
some change over time, but is not itself in motion or even capable of
    being changed.

Quantum Theory says much the same. A quantum system is defined by a wavefunction operating with some static base states. The base states
are immutable. The wavefunction says how the base states correlate at
the moment and, possibly, how those correlations will (cough) "be" at
another time. But time is not inside the base states. These are just
the possible ways some system (e.g. the universe) might be when
    observed.

In quantum computing programmers manipulate the wavefunction, not the
base states. But they "think" in terms of setting this bit or that bit
in their computer but knowing full well that's just a shorthand way of
thinking about how some subsequent (whatever than means) measurement
    will look.

So if the base states are immutable on the one hand, and the universe
is a frozen Bloch fish-tank on the other, how then do we change our
mind about anything? How do we learn? If "we" are inside the universe
our best theories of Science at present tend to say we are frozen in
time and time is an illusion.

Unfortunately there are innumerable possible ways to go to allay the
various contradictions. But that's reality for you. Sorry. "Reality".

An agnostic *is* an atheist. An atheist doesn't necessarily
believe there are no gods, so it's not incumbent upon him to
    prove it.

Exactly. An atheist is anyone who has no belief in gods.
That includes agnostics. Agnostics are a subset of atheists.

Some atheists have an active belief that there are no gods.
They are sometimes called "strong atheists". Other atheists,
"weak atheists", lack any belief either way.

Do not confuse "does not believe in gods" with "believes
there are no gods". They are disbelief and belief, night and
    day.

Corollary: everyone was born an atheist.

Next up: what does "believe" mean?

I messaged MW and thanked them for backing me up on that.

I don't know what you are finding in "does not believe" that
    contradicts anything I said.
