    Hello!

Debian provides needrestart, RedHat/Fedora provides needs-restarting to
detect which daemons need to be restarted after updating certain
    packages (e.g. including libraries).

Is there such a software for Slackware?

Debian 12 doesnt, we have bind on freepbx box and everytime debian
updates it, bind dies due to permissions, nevfer lets me know in fact o
nly time it tells me it needs it is when a kernel update gets installed,

Debian stable provides needrestart. Although it maybe needs to be
    installed manually.

I have bind9 on 2 Debian machines, apt upgrades work fine and bind does
not crash, the old version still runs until the new one is started.

If you use slackpkg, and on Current at least, you'll see entries in a
    file like this:
    /usr/libexec/slackpkgrY#rLore+ grep needs *
core-functions.sh:# The /var/run/needs_restarting file contains the list of upgraded
    core-functions.sh:function needs_restarting() {
    core-functions.sh: awk -F/ '{ print $NF }' >> $ROOT/var/run/needs_restarting
    core-functions.sh: needs_restarting

What I do is watch for the internet-facing services and just restart
those if I see them mentioned in the ChangeLog. Everything else will
update on the next reload. Obviously glibc and kernels are a different
    case.

    Hi, Marco!
    I don't know. I installed slackware 15 without X and use it as a

This is rather risky, as certain packages received security-related patches.

I run Slackware 15 and update it very time updates are released.

Those systems use systemd, on Slackware it would be rather
easy to do this using a shell script. A quick example:

for rc in `find /etc/rc.d -type f -executable -name 'rc.*' \
    | egrep -v 'list of files to bypass'`
    do
    $rc status
    #--- examine results
    done

That is a quick example and you will need to bypass some
rc files. Or you can just query the ones you care about.
But it assumes all rc files support option 'status'.
I know /etc/rc.d/rc.gpm does not support that option.

Another possible option, but I never tried this.
Via /etc/inittab you can add entries to that file for
items you are concerned about. Using the console entries
as a template. I do not know if that will work or if
    even possible.

Usually when installing or upgrading packages the right way to do it is:

    1) Download the packages together with their .txt and .asc files

    2) Use gpg and the .asc files to verify the contents of the packages. For
this you need the public Slackware GPG-KEY file which can be downloaded
by ftp, or even better, copied from an old official installation media if
you happen to have Slackware 14.2 or older DVD/CDROM.

    3) Install or upgrade those files which were verified successfully by gpg.

If any file fails the GPG verification, try to download again, maybe from another mirror.

    regards Henrik

That's not a Slackware issue at all. That 100% depends upon what tool
you use to download. Some support restarting partial downloads at the
spot where they ended, others simply start downloading the whole file
    all over again.

Yes, it's not a slackware problem. I'll try again to thoroughly
prepare for updating software packages and libraries.

In years past, I used slackware 14.2 on another old computer and
updated it via 4G mobile internet =))

I use an old computer with 768 MB RAM and a pentium 4 processor
for my fido node. In slackware 15, golded, husky, binkd,
fetchmail, procmail, nftables, mutt work perfectly. Also in the
near future I will try i2pd (from slackbuilds).

This is done using wget via slackpkg.
If the process interrupts, it will try to start where it ended and if
that fails, it starts at the beginning.
At the end, the downloaded packages are checked against the checksum and
the PGP signature, so if it is faulty, it won't be installed.

Hello, perhaps you didn't need this, but I had to chime in:

I shutdown and restart my computer daily. It helps me to keep the
computer fresh and my skills current.

This is especially so, because I have modified my Slackware. I call it
Zombie Silas. Silas refers to the "recipe" I follow when installing
Slackware 15.0 to an internal drive. I call this the "Basis". Using a
script, at $lib/Zombie/install, I run rsync to first clone the Basis to a flashdrive, then modify the installation on the flashdrive. This
modification makes it bootable plus other changes.

One of these "other" changes is configuring it to wipe and remake the
home directory at each boot. This cleans it out, then puts back, what is
    is needed.

$lib/Zombie/install runs within my SAM (Simple ASCII Menus) framework. https://rosevearsoftware.com/products/sam/get https://rosevearsoftware.com/products/sam/libraries/Zombie

This may be more (manual work) than what you're looking for, but usually
when I suspect that something may be misbehaving following an update,
I check with lsof to see if it's holding any deleted files open,
    and manually restart if so.

Adapting that idea to something that could be used as part of the patch
routine might look like (perhaps at least start out looking like) this:

    ; lsof | grep -wis del | awk '{print $2}' | sort -u | xargs -r ps |\
    awk '{$2=$3=$4=""; print substr($0, 1, 72)}'
    PID COMMAND
    1021 /sbin/haveged -w 1024 -v 1 -p /var/run/haveged.pid
    1499 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name guest=...
    1530 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name guest=...
    1559 /usr/bin/qemu-system-x86_64 -name guest=...
    21031 /local/bin/cf-execd
    21042 /local/bin/cf-serverd
    29970 /local/bin/cf-monitord

I do not promise to have considered every possibility, but I think that something like the above could be a good place to start. I hope that it
    helps.

Ah. So I chatted with duck.ai about this just now. We got "off in the sticks", but here is where it landed:

Me: Thanks for that. Need coffee. (Just kidding. I avoid caffeine, but
    this is getting really abstract!)

Duck: Quite understandablerCowerCOve gone from rCLshould I reboot?rCY to the metaphysics of server identity.

The practical summary is refreshingly ordinary:

On a personal computer, reboot whenever it is convenient.
On a server, restart only what needs restarting when possible.
If uninterrupted maintenance matters, make the service replaceable
