Thanks for responding. She has sufficient experience with linux to be
able to run gimp.
Didn't know that.
Apparently the urgency to replace Photoshop/Lightroom has dwindled.
I asked her do a simple google search to find whether data files
were compatible between Gimp and Photoshop. I see that some are,
some are not but I don't know which she has.
I asked weeks ago and she hasn't got back to me.
Well, she has a linux box with gimp on to play with, so, if interested
can do so at her own speed.

Gimp has a rather steep learning curve but is definitey industrial
quality and then some! I would warm up to it gradually in parallel over
many months, taking notes about those manipulations that I need most frequently trying them and comparing RESULTS instead of talk (always consulting 'how2gimpphotoshop' resources.

In this day and age I think either Darktable or Rawtherapee are the alternatives to Adobe's products.
