The trouble with that is that you are looking at her having to learn two >>> new environments at once.

Thanks for responding. She has sufficient experience with linux to be
    able to run gimp.

    Didn't know that.

Apparently the urgency to replace Photoshop/Lightroom has dwindled.
I asked her do a simple google search to find whether data files
were compatible between Gimp and Photoshop. I see that some are,
some are not but I don't know which she has.

I asked weeks ago and she hasn't got back to me.

Well, she has a linux box with gimp on to play with, so, if interested
can do so at her own speed.

Gimp has a rather steep learning curve but is definitey industrial
quality and then some! I would warm up to it gradually in parallel over
many months, taking notes about those manipulations that I need most frequently trying them and comparing RESULTS instead of talk (always consulting 'how2gimpphotoshop' resources.

In this day and age I think either Darktable or Rawtherapee are the alternatives to Adobe's products.

Depends on what you're doing: Darktable and Rawtherapee (both excellent
pieces of software, though each with their own approach to workflow)
permit extensive editting of existing (typically photographic, though I
suppose not necessarily) images. Gimp and Photoshop permit many of the
same edits, but also provide tools for creating images from scratch.
There's certainly overlap, but Darktable and Rawtherapee don't entirely
    replace Gimp (or Photoshop).
