• Upgrading Slackware64 -15.0 to mesa-25.0.7-x86_64-2_slack15.0.txz

    From Newsgroup: alt.os.linux.slackware

Anyone installed the subject package on a base install of Slackware 15
    with latest updates (kernel 5.15.206)

Requirements for a proposed video card upgrade recommend the mesa 25
    over the 21.3.

    Regards,

Some people yes, but not me as I haven't had the need for it. In http:// ftp.slackware.com/pub/slackware/slackware64-15.0/testing/packages/ graphics-updates/ there is a prebuilt package mesa-25.0.7-x86_64-2_slack15.0.txz which is now almost a year old. The
same directoyr has a README which says:

    -8<--------------------------------------
Here's an attempt to bring the graphics on -stable up to date.

Mesa needed to be built with a recent LLVM/clang, so you'll need to
    install
the llvm20-compat package from /extra to use these.

cbindgen and cmake are build-time dependencies, but it probably doesn't
    hurt
    to install them.

    Enjoy! :-)
    -8<--------------------------------------

The llvm20-compat package is in the /extra directory which indicates that
it is considered more suitable for a stable version of Slackware. The
/testing directory is more for users who want to be kind of beta testers
but do not want to do the jump to Slackware current. It is kind of "use
    at your own risk".

There is a thread about the test mesa package at:

    Thanks Henrik.

I had stumbled across all of that and couldn't make a decision. I was
looking for some affirmation that it could be done painlessly ;-)

I have had both Slackware 15.0 and 15 Current on this box for years with
the occasional reboot to update Current and see if I could measure the progress with my limited usage. But, at ~ 80 I'm not as adventurous as
I was a few short decades ago so I've been putting off the switch to
    Current full time.

My old radeon video card was giving even the 5.15.206 kernel problems so
I sucked it up, installed a new video card and the requisite power
supply to run it and made Current the top entry in lilo.conf. Even
though I'll never use the horespower.

All in all the mechanics and the mental gyrations were exhilarating!
