• No sound from online radio

    From Monsieur@Monsieur@notreal.invalid to alt.os.linux.mint on Mon Jul 13 19:45:00 2026
    From Newsgroup: alt.os.linux.mint

I can no longer hear anything on this site since their recent makeover:

    https://sectorradio.com/

Did I break something? Did they break something? Is it just me, my
settings, my browser, my hardware? Could it be my soundcard? I tried it
in Librewolf, Waterfox and Opera but I get only silence.

Other online radio stations seem to work fine.

    Thanks for checking.

"Cipher mismatch. Some problem with SSL/TLS."

Try an SSLLABs evaluation of the web site.
It does not appear to be part of the "HTTPS Everywhere" campaign :-)

    When I used

    http://sectorradio.com/

it seems it might be a russian site, I punched the "NO" button presumably for Norwegian, and I got some classical music in the speakers. I was using FLAC format.

    Yes, it works.

    I booted a live LM 22.3.

That link took *forever* to come up. When it finally arrived, I used my console for curl and wget to see if there were hiccups that caused the
delay, but they popped up just fine.

Then, the index page was in some foreign font, likely cyrillic, as the
    IP is .ru.

I don't know how to navigate the .ru page to find some sound.

Then I used google translate to help me; which ALSO took forever to come
up, which was still in .ru or cyrillic or whatever.

So far I haven't advanced to an opportunity to get sound.

In Firefox/Librewolf you can just click the translate symbol to the
right in the address bar and translate the whole site to the language of
    your choice. Works fine here.

Normally you just have to click the large Play button and it should
start playing. You can switch stations with the two-letter buttons.

Could that be the reason why it doesn't work? Seems strange that they
    haven't fixed it yet...

    When I used

Yes, the old http site still works, but about a month ago they switched
to https and no matter what I try I cannot get any sound out of it.

it seems it might be a russian site, I punched the "NO" button presumably for Norwegian, and I got some classical music in the speakers. I was using FLAC format.

    No, NO is for Nota...

The stations are PRogressive, SPace, Nota, JAzz, GEny 80s, NExt 90s,
INdigo 00s, ZED 10s, and TErra...:-)

Thanks for checking. I'll continue to use the http version for the time
    being.

The network configuration, is intended to cause "https everywhere" behavior
to revert to an http-only session. However, I don't know if browser
design is supposed to automatically switch back to http, if https
    negotiation fails.

This looks like an implementation decision and not a "mistake" or "accident". Nobody is going to fix that, because that is their intent.

I've NEVER had my browser changed by anything, except for this site...

If you don't check it, you will soon discover that visits to
other normal sites are broken. Until you flip your proxy setting back
to None. I normally set Proxy to None, for any cases where I am
reviewing settings. I have more browsers, than I have time to configure
them. But any time I am in that section of the software, I would
be setting that one to None. I don't think, even back when I was
working, that an occasion required a proxy.

    But you're a chatter-box.

It costs money, to run Internet radio. That's because
the connection bandwidth costs money. When an Internet Radio
has advertising, it is easy to see the attempt to recoup
    that money.

Like "Free VPN", "Free Radio" cannot be free as the money
has to come from somewhere. For example, the postimage.org
site, burns $30,000 in bandwidth (at $0.03 per gigabyte) per month.
That's a third of a million dollars per year. The advertising
on that site, has always been of the lowest grade materials,
and the cost per impression must be extremely low.

When a service is "free" and tangible assets are consumed
to run it, you have to ask how they make the money back.
That's why you should be suspicious. It doesn't matter
what country the participants are in, it depends on what
    their intent is.
