• Number on apps in the panel.

Does anyone know what the little number overlaying the app name in the panel is?
Mine is a red dot with a number inside. I have no idea what it's for. Normally it's on
a folder name in the panel.

I've noticed this recently. It mainly occurs on the Thunderbird tab, but
I have seen it on one or two others.

What it appears to be is a reflection of something being reported as a notification (with TB it could be an error report of failing to connect
to a news or mail server). You can confirm it's a notification by the following:

Open "Notifications" in Mint's menu. At the top it should show "Enable notifications" as being operative. Now go to the bottom and click on
"Display a test notification". Firstly, a "Lorem ipsum" message box
should appear and then disappear after a few seconds; if you have the "Notifications" applet configured to appear in the panel, you should see
it appear there. At the same time the red dot with a number 1 should
appear in the "Notifications" tab in the taskbar/panel. As soon as you
click on the notifications applet the "Lorem ipsum" message will appear
again, but once you click outside it or on its "x" it will disappear,
and so will the red dot with the number in the notification tab.

Those are "Grouped Window List" notifications. It can be a window count
badge or, in your case, a notification badge. If you have group windows
by application selected in the Grouped Window List box you will see these notifications if you also have selected "Show Window Count Badges" and
"Show Notification Badges" selected underneath the "Panel" tab in the
    Grouped Window List dialog box.

To access the Grouped Window List dialog box, click on any icon in the
panel, doesn't matter which one, and select Applet Preferences/Configure.
