• reinstalling GRUB after win upgrade

    From santo@nanci@auroville.org.in to alt.os.linux.mageia on Tue Dec 9 09:43:22 2025

    Hi all...
    I have a dual boot with M9 and win10.
I have to upgrade from win10 to win 11 and my trusted technician said that doing so will overwrite the boot loader but does not know how to reinstall
    it.
I googled around and the procedure seems a bit above my skill...it mention
of using e.g. my M9 bootable USB to a live version and then at a console
give a series of commands to...I am afraid of finding myself in an unknown territory...given that all my important Datas are in a separate D
partition and not much is stored in Linux I was wondering if it is not
better after all reinstall Mageia9...but even here I have a difficulty...I remember that wwhhen I installed it I had to go shortly into the BIOS and
make some selection Legacy or Uefi...if I remember well
Below are details of my system which can be of any use to suggest to what
    or which way to go.

    p.s.
    /boot/EFI
    /usr
/home are on a separate partition
I was wondering if I go for a reinstall is sufficient only format the / boot/EFI instead of reinstalling everything

I live in India I may not be able to answer right away any suggestion
    which may come...

Thank you in advance for your help
    Santo

Santo, BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP (Famous last words) ....

I'm no expert but .... if you have the MGA9 installation media, why not
just upgrade your Win10 (sda3) to Win11 ..... but keep an eye out for
the Win11 installation trying to wipe out your Mageia9 installation
    (sda6, sda7, sda8 & sda9) .... and then use your MGA9 bootable USB to re-install the Grub if necessary.

Oh, and BACK UP, BACK UP, BACK UP.

Good luck. (one day soon/eventually) I'll stick MageiaLinux 9 on this
Win11 Desktop in Dual Boot fashion .... and then upgrade that to
MageiaLinux 10 which is a bit overdue for release.

Guess this means I should get around to "installing" the MGA9 iso onto a

Remember that Win11 forces you to "register" and have an wifi or
ethernet connection to install it, so you can "sign away your rights"
before installing or first starting up Windows 11. It sounds like you have already done so
(ie win11 is installed and wirking). However, if not, there is a way of geting around this
look for "install win11 without internet."

Yes, too late, William, this Desktop came with Win 11 pre-installed.

Shock Horror!! When will we ever find a Desktop or Laptop that comes
with Linux (pick a version, any version) pre-installed??

I suppose there is money to be had if Windows is pre-installed. Linux,
    not so much!!

Considering that MGA9 has been out for around two years, it probably is.

But, note that I said the alpha isos are being tested. What I failed to mention is that these are the first round of alpha isos, definitely not
ready to be released to the public yet. Depending on what we find, and
how easy the issues are to fix, it could be quite a while before we have
    an Official MGA10 release.

In the meantime, MGA8 has been EOL and not receiving any updates since
three months after MGA9 was released, meaning it is now around two years
out of date. If you are using MGA8 on anything, it should be upgraded to
MGA9 NOW. Two years ago would have been better.

TJ, my Laptop "died" in January this year. When I had purchased it,

years, I had installed MGA4 and MGA6 .... which I had been using at that

I thought MGA10 was supposed to have been released in about March this
year (2025) and, when it wasn't, I thought you guys might have been

From having previously installed MGA V4 and V6 on to my Win7 Laptop, I
seem to recall, as part of the Partitioning process, you could just
change the sizes of the Partitions 'On the Fly', so to speak, rather
    than having to re-install Win11.

    Was that not possible??

Below are details of my system which can be of any use to suggest to what
    or which way to go.

You could use an installation usb, or use a live mga9 usb, an choose the "Recover the boot loader" of some such line. As you say, reinstalling is
a pain. All of the programs you installed after the original
installation, and all the changes to the configuration wouldhave to be
redone. Not nice. I have had to do that on two different machines (one
being an installation on a new computer, and the other a messed up
attempt to upgrade a MGA8 machine.
I keep finding stuff from the mga8 installation that was not installed by that mga9 initial installation.
And doing a comparison (rpm -qa --qf ${NAME} fun on the two
instaltions, and comparing them) produced a mess.
