My libreoffice always opens with the text character size in Impress at
18 pts. That is rediculously small for a display in a talk. I would like
the default to be 26 pts. Now I can briefly cause that to happen format->character and setting the point size, but it will soon forget
that and go back to 18. how do I set the default to 26?

Use Styles and change the font size and save for all styles that you use.
