• ISO & tarball filenames

    In past I downloaded Gentoo installer, liveDVD, and stage 3, but came back later and didn't know what any of it is for. I strongly recommend--like
    most software projects--prefix your name 'Gentoo' to these .ISOs &
    tarballs, so if someone just wants to try it, and comes back later, they
    still know what it is.

    $ file install-amd64-minimal-20250831T170358Z.iso install-amd64-minimal-20250831T170358Z.iso: ISO 9660 CD-ROM filesystem data (DOS/MBR boot sector) 'Gentoo-amd64-20250831' (bootable)

    no such luck for the 'stage' files though... (but the 'stage' in
    the filename is a good hint)

    Doubt OP has waited for almost a year... but but...

    From the Gentoo handbook: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Full/Installation#What_are_stage_files.3F

    What are stage files?
    A stage file[1] is an archive which serves as the seed for a Gentoo environment.

    Stage 3 files can be downloaded from releases/amd64/autobuilds/ on
    any of the
    official Gentoo mirrors[2]. Stages are updated frequently and are therefore not
    included within official live images.

    [2]: https://www.gentoo.org/downloads/mirrors/

    Read more how to use the stage file: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Handbook:AMD64/Full/Installation#Choosing_a_stage_file

    In short stage 3 file includes the base of the files needed for Gentoo installation, you can always download the latest stage 3 even if your
    install cd is ages old and be able to install the latest up to date version.

    Indeed, but OP stated that first someone has to remember that
    it's Gentoo what these files are for.

    "mkdir gentoo && mv install-amd64-minimal-20250831T170358Z.iso
    *stage3*txz gentoo/" generally would fix that future issue :P

    Not really: web browsers generally do a poor job of asking you where to save--using previous locations--so files end up elsewhere, so are often
    found elsewhere. My point stands. Almost all other operating system distributions name their tarballs after their OS. People know these are installers and that the non-GUI version is in comparison/contrast minimal:
    you don't need those words as much as 'Gentoo' itself, which lately I
    prefix and remove aforementioned words.
