• Open-Source(?) driver for Radeon 5770?

I don't know what my Devuan system is using for a driver but it
only gives very low resolution, less than most windows require! The AMD proprietary driver install aborts because it no longer supports the
version of X. According to AMD:

"Your graphics card is considered a legacy product, and as such, it has stopped receiving driver support."

B U T the same card works just fine in my new Debian system so my
question is "can I and how would I use whatever driver Debian bundles
with the latest version"? It's probably an open-source one and if it
works on Debian then it should work on Devuan as well I think.

    TIA

The "radeon" module should support it. Check if it is being loaded and
    if dmesg outputs any errors.

On the subject MSI board with 'legacy' *radeon 5770*
    Max resolution 640x480/720x400/720x480
(Fresh Devuan & Debian installs) ==================================================

these are the only dmesg lines that include radeon or amd:

Like the link says, you're missing firmware that's required to use
the GPU driver. It seems that the firmware-amd-graphics package has
lots of Radeon firmwares, so I'd start by installing that (from "non-free-firmware" on newer Debian, as described at the link).

    THANKS!!!

I did a fresh install but ended up with a mess:

For a DM selection 3 choices are offered, gdm/lightdm/sddm and I picked
sddm. On 1st boot I got no DM at all only runlevel 3, trying to command
any of the above DM's does nothing, startx brings up some weird default DE
in even lower resolution that I can't even bail out of. Both software-
install and grub each failed 'one step' but I could't figure out which
step and backin up and repeating solved nothing.

I remembered that at one point I had selected 'install ALL drivers' which reminded me of slackware's HUGE kernel. So on the next install I picked 'targeted drivers'. THAT resulted in an installation lasting about TWICE
as long and I cought a glimpse of some _problem_ flashing by about "radeon r600 or later". The DE resolution ended up being a bit better this time
and I was thus able to use the thing to install the firmware-amd-graphics package which was MISSING which fixed the resolution problem altogether.

So I copied the Devuan installation from my x590 machine over to the 5770 machine again to be back at square one.
