• Synaptic gone?

    From bad sector@forgetski@_INVALID.net to alt.os.linux.debian on Mon Mar 3 20:24:26 2025
    From Newsgroup: alt.os.linux.debian

Just installed the latest Debian (after many years) but cannot find any
GUI package manager in the menu tree, is this something new? Also tried

    # apt install google-earth-pro

    and got NOTHING.

Synaptic is still in the repository.

Google Earth isn't in the repo of Debian. https://www.google.com/earth/about/versions/#download-pro
You have to use the DEB package that will set up the Google Debian repo
    on your system.

I'm wire-connected to the net (because my usb-wifi transceiver isn't recognized), doing

    # apt install synaptic says:

"..not available, but is referred to by another package.
...is missing, has been obsoleted, or is available only from another source"

Why would installed sources not include something as basic? What repo
must I include in what list?

    I'll DL it tonight, thanks

you can use apt search to search for packages.
sometimes the name of the package is different from what one might suspect.

I forgot all about this thread, the only line in that file was for the
dvd, fixed it, synaptic is installed.

    Probably, can't remember :-(

Making a note of it under Debian/packagemanagment/cLi

ONE of my many problems is that I run many distros and whenever I happen
to see advice like this (applicable to Debian or let's say apt-friendly distros) I may just then as now happen to be using another distro.

But I've devised an evil plan to fight back, I keep editing the same
notes available form whatever distro I happen to be running ...done,
    and thanks :-)

ynaptic does have a refresh button

I don't see my reply to this anywhere, so here goes again.

YES that WAS the WHOLE problem. Synaptic does have a refresh button,
it's just that I'm spoiled by Yast which doesn't even want to start if
    it cannot refresh.
