zypper dup
It should show what package it is in the process of trying to preload. Instead it just shows what packages are 'done' or 'in cache' but if a
load fgails I have no idea what package to take further action on.

Or you can tell it to download everything in advance.

using 'zypper dup --download-in-advance' doesn't really change the
behavior:
'Preloading Packages: [ (310.3 MiB / 6.29 GiB) (27 B/s)] <4%>======[|]'
and then dies.
'Installation has completed with error'.
which is itself an error because no installation has completed.
If it were to say 'preloading package xyz.rpm' then I could temporarily taboo that package before trying again.
The last item under /var/log/zypp is weeks old:
history-20260715.xz
What switch can I use to just ignore/drop any package posing any problem whatsoever?-a I have often found that installing MOST of say an 8000
package run with taboos if necessary and then repeating with no taboos
ends up fixing any previous issues.

Try 'zypper --verbose dup' or even 'zypper --verbose --verbose dup'.
I think the log to check is /var/log/zypper.log rather than /var/log/zypp/history.
