Dana Weinger, 56, was enjoying a night out at Driftwood Grill
Home of the Lazy Gator at Lake Marion in Summerton, South
Carolina, with her husband and other family members Saturday
night when a gust of wind dislodged an umbrella, turning it
into a projectile.

The umbrella struck Weinger in the neck, severing her carotid
artery, Clarendon County Sheriff Tim Baxley told WIS 10.

Local EMS workers responded to the scene, where Weinger was
found unresponsive. She died at the scene.

Back in 1985 or so, I was the day bartender at a semiprivate golf
course in Colorado. One day, one of the cart boys burst into the
clubhouse desperately looking for a first-aid kit. I pointed him
to the one we had on the wall of the kitchen, but it turned out to
be somewhat less than adequate.

What had happened was that a guy on the front nine had allowed his twelve-year-old (or so) kid to drive the golf cart, and the kid
had backed over a barrier rope which tensioned up and pulled a
simple stake out of the ground, which, upon having been freed,
flung itself into the guy's temple. The kid panicked and pulled
the stake out of his dad's head, and there was a lot of blood all
of a sudden.

A couple of guys in the foursome behind them took charge of things
and got the guy back to the pro shop to get him taken care of, but
it was too late. The guy bled out on the lawn.

I will remember that cart boy's panic, my waitress crying in my
arms, the ashen faces of the dead man's son and of the paramedic
trying to console him, and the flies feeding on the spilt blood
until the day I die.
