On this date 190 years ago, the Mexican army at San Antonio under
Generalisso Antonio Lopez de Santa Anna attacked a force of fewer than 200 Texians in the Alamo. All of the defenders and up to a thousand Mexican soldiers were killed. During the 13-day siege that preceded the battle,
the Texian commander, Lt. Colonel William Barret Travis, sent out multiple appeals for aid. Forty-six days later, the Texian army, inspired by
Travis's appeals and their brothers' sacrifice, defeated Santa Anna at the Battle of San Jacinto. The Texians' battle cry: "Remember the Alamo!"

I know that David is well-versed in this bit of history, but for
anyone else curious about it, I recommend William C. Davis's "Three
Roads to the Alamo." Really a triple biography of Crockett, Bowie,
and Travis, but also a good and accessible treatment of the battle
and of the events leading up to it.
