Iran's Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei's wife, Mansoureh
Khojasteh Bagherzadeh, has died after reportedly succumbing to
injuries sustained during US-Israeli strikes. Iran's state
broadcaster Press TV said on Monday that she had "attained
martyrdom" following the attack. Khamenei himself was killed
in the strikes carried out by the United States and Israel on
Saturday. Iranian state media reported that Khojasteh was
wounded in the same series of strikes and later died from her
injuries.
Iranian state media reported that Ayatollah Khamenei was killed
in the initial phase of the strikes, attacks that U.S. and
Israeli officials said were directed at strategic military and
security targets and their confirmation came hours after US
President Donald Trump publicly announced the cleric's death
as part of a wider effort aimed at effecting regime change.
Following Khamenei's death, there were mixed reactions in Iran.
While some citizens celebrated in the streets, others expressed
deep sorrow, as evidenced by an emotional TV host breaking down
while announcing his death. This contrast highlights the divided
sentiments among the Iranian populace regarding Khamenei's
leadership and legacy.
Reports also said that several of Khamenei's relatives, including
his daughter, his son-in-law, and his granddaughter, were killed
in the same series of strikes. A member of the Tehran City
Council, cited by Reuters through the Young Journalists Club,
had earlier confirmed fatalities within the Supreme Leader's
extended family after the attacks.
