R. Bruce Dold had a very long career on the editorial board side of
Chicago Tribune. He was a writer then editor. At the end of his career,
he was managing editor and publisher. He tried to maintain consistent
quality through the paper's decline due to massively stupid business
decisions. It's hard to remember that Trib was once a blue-chip company.
There through many changes of ownership, he was given the ultimate
promotion to publisher while still retaining the managing editor job
when there was a scandal among ownership. A sex scandal forced one of
the owners out. He sold his shares to Alden Capital. This gave them a
minority stake with an outsized influence and yet another round of
editorial job cuts began.
Later, Alden would buy out the other owners. Amazingly, the McCormick
Trust no longer holds shares.
He died 12/3/2025, age 70.
Here's today's editorial which shamefully fails to mention his
resignation.
