Turn it several turns to the right and stop on 32.

Then turn to the left, pass 48 once and stop on 48 the second time you
    get to it.

Jay, read your posts above and wondered if you could advise me on a lock i have. it was my dad's and i will probably never use it but its sentimental. it is a Slaymaker and has patent #'s 1837071 & 2047102.

    Chris

You can Google the patent numbers for a technical description and
internal diagrams. Patent 1837071 was issued in 1930 for a laminated
lock and 2047102 was issued in 1936 for a combination lock, which the
patent describes as a "permutation lock". That gives you a ballpark
date of the lock as being made after 1936, but probably not much after
or there would be more recent patented improvements made and mentioned.

Making a key or determining a combination from a patent number isn't
possible, as it describes the invention of the lock and not the
individual charasterics of a specific sample lock. Sometimes there is a
code number stamped or inked on the lock that can be looked up by a
locksmith to make a key or find the combination.

Turn it several turns to the right and stop on 2.

Then turn to the left, pass 14 once and stop on 14 the second time you

It's somewhat odd to have a letter both before and after the numbers.

    Try this:

Turn it several turns to the right and stop on 41.

Then turn to the left, pass 21 once and stop on 21 the second time you
    get to it.

Then turn to the right, stop on 39 and pull on the shackle.

If that doesn't work, try this:

Turn it several turns to the right and stop on 2.

Then turn to the left, pass 18 once and stop on 18 the second time you
    get to it.

Then turn to the right, stop on 8 and pull on the shackle.

I haven't tried for a few years but it used to be that the Slaymaker combo lock was one of the easiest ones to pick. There is no serated plate on the wafers, so you can turn twice to the left, pull up on the shackle, and feel the dog slip into each of the grooves. You can get the three numbers, and
try different combinations. used to take me about 30 or 40 seconds.
    Of course they may have improved it a bit since '70 -- (:-}
