Friends,

A couple of days ago, one of my dad's friends sent me some Punjabi ghazals =
of the legendary Urdu poet Zafar Iqbal. It was a pleasant surprise for me s= ince I had never read ZI's Punjabi poetry. In fact, dad's friend, who himse=
lf is a Punjabi poet, is now planning to collaborate with some people to ge=
t ZI's Punjabi ghazals printed in Gurmukhi script from Shahmukhi script. I = think it is a wonderful idea and will allow the people in Indian Punjab, mo=
st of whom can not read Urdu script, access to ZI's Punjabi poetry.

I have always been a huge Zafar Iqbal fan and suddenly started craving his = asha'ar, and have been reading his kuliyat again.

ab aap ZI kaa voh she'r suniye jo pichhle do din se mere zehn-o-dil par taa=
ri hai, aur maiN ne ise pehle kabhi post nahiiN kiyaa.

TakTakii baaNdh ke maiN dekh raha huuN jis ko
yeh bhi mumkin hai k vo saamne baiTha hi na ho!

This thought just wowed me.....maybe because there are times I can so relat=
e to it.......

reaction to it. Alup has been a constant in my life for a very long time, = just took it for granted. Even though most members, myself included, have n=
ot been too active recently, the mere fact that Alup existed always gave me=
solace.

I have responded to UVR sahib in the other thread. As I said there, I am no=
t much of an FB fan, but if that is the only channel to keep Alup alive, I =
am open to it. I had created FB account once, let me see if I can activate = it.

One more thing, I am already having trouble typing and posting messages in = Alup. On Microsoft edge, the message does not post even after I verify that=
I am not a robot. Anyways, I switched to Firefox to post earlier today. Ju=
st wondering if anyone else is having such issues.

Yes, many different singers have sung this ghazal over the years, but I am particularly biased towards Begam Akhtar version, my first love. :)

Very interesting that you have brought up this particular she'r. Every time=
I read this ghazal, I have always paused over this she'r. I find it sort o=
f intriguing, perhaps because I find this qaafia to be somewhat unexpected.=
I mean unless I have already uttered the "baat", how would I know that 'tu= mhaare jii ko burii lagii'? This is the ambiguity that makes me pause and p= erhaps expect the qaafia to be different. Maybe something like "bayaaN se p= ehle hi Toknaa", like you are about to say something insensitive, the other=
person sees it coming and stops you in your tracks.=20

Of course, I dare not question any she'r of Momin, I am totally unqualified=
to do so. However, I wanted to share my thoughts on this one, since I have=
pondered over it more than once. Let us see if I am making sense to anyone=
else, including you.

What a loss, I hope the recording can be found in some archives somewhere. = The good thing is you at least preserved the asha'ar he quoted. This remind=
s me, I had recorded an amazing interview with Amjad sahib for Mehfil-e-Suk= han once, don't have it anymore. Maybe Shoaib sahib has it archived, I'll h= ave to ask him. I am generally bad about preserving important pictures/reco= rdings. But as you said, we have the memories! :)

Now let me share a beautiful short nazm of Amjad sahib that I heard from hi=
m in person more than twenty years ago. I loved it then, and still love it = just as much. I remember back then I had asked Amjad sahib to explain the m= eaning of the title. Also, during my last meeting with him in Fall 2022, I = had asked him to recite this poem impromptu in a private mehfil, and he sai=
d he couldn't recall it fully right at that moment.=20

na vaadaa hai koii tum se koii rishtaa nibhaane kaa
na koii aur hii dil meN iraadaa hai

Friends,

A couple of days ago, one of my dad's friends sent me some Punjabi ghazals =
of the legendary Urdu poet Zafar Iqbal. It was a pleasant surprise for me s= ince I had never read ZI's Punjabi poetry. In fact, dad's friend, who himse=
lf is a Punjabi poet, is now planning to collaborate with some people to ge=
t ZI's Punjabi ghazals printed in Gurmukhi script from Shahmukhi script. I = think it is a wonderful idea and will allow the people in Indian Punjab, mo=
st of whom can not read Urdu script, access to ZI's Punjabi poetry.

I have always been a huge Zafar Iqbal fan and suddenly started craving his = asha'ar, and have been reading his kuliyat again.

ab aap ZI kaa voh she'r suniye jo pichhle do din se mere zehn-o-dil par taa=
ri hai, aur maiN ne ise pehle kabhi post nahiiN kiyaa.

TakTakii baaNdh ke maiN dekh raha huuN jis ko
yeh bhi mumkin hai k vo saamne baiTha hi na ho!

This thought just wowed me.....maybe because there are times I can so relat=
e to it.......

One more thing, I am already having trouble typing and posting messages in = Alup. On Microsoft edge, the message does not post even after I verify that=
I am not a robot. Anyways, I switched to Firefox to post earlier today. Ju=
st wondering if anyone else is having such issues.
