    Hi all!

This is my very first post to usenet. I've been reading about it for
sometime, and I find it very interesting. I've also been an avid irc
user for more than a decade now.

I am curious about the community here. I've added quite a few news
groups to check out, and I'm interested in finding out what some of the
more active ones are, as it really seems to be hit or miss if I find
    activity.

I'm currently active on libera, snoonet, efnet, and a small network
called in the mansion. I've met some very lovely people in my time on
irc, and I'm interested in expanding my horizons, digitally speaking. I
am also curious if there are any old running niche irc servers which
might like some new users, I really want to learn more about usenet and
    irc in general.

I honestly think both of these protocols are quite possibly the best
thing for users, compared to the modern bloated world wide web. Sure
it's easier, but we've lost so much control over our digital lives. I
know irc has some clients which facelift it to a more modern look, like
the lounge or irccloud. But I am curious if usenet has any modern
clients. I'm currently using thunderbird, which is okay. But in what
I've looked up, it seems most things are not...great by modern
standards. It feels like usenet hasn't had a facelift since the 90s.

Sorry for the ramble, I just wanted to get something out there, to see
if I could get any response, and possibly meet new interesting people!

Hello there. I'm on most of those IRC networks as well. Usenet is still
pretty low activity but at least it's not getting spammed like it was
back in the early 2000s. Gotta be the change one wants to see in the
world (as you are by posting). Glad to have you.

It would be cool to find some spare time to put it in use, and maybe to maintain it too.

About myself, these days I'm mostly on libera.chat, although I've been
hanging out on the Tildeverse too.

A long long time ago I was on Quakenet :) There was a channel named "#linuxcafe" where I had a few friends. Good times!

As for you, I'd like to expand :)
I've tried Efnet at some point, since I like the idea of being on an
historical network, but I couldn't join anything interesting.

Would you have any recommendation for good channels on Efnet?

I honestly think both of these protocols are quite possibly the best

If it wasn't, you would be one of those "normies" who go for social
    networks, of course!
Which means two things: 1) we are likely to agree on many topics, and 2)
we are likely to be in a bubble. :D

Lol sounds a little sketchy? I assume this is open source? I'd love to
take a look at the code.

I joined, in the same spirit of trying to learn more, historically
speaking, about irc, however, what I've mostly found is a bunch of
racists, who aren't as good at computers as they pretend to be. That's
not to say everyone is like that, but, that's the first initial
impression I get trying to immerse myself into the network. I'm sticking around, on the off chance I find cool people, who introduce me to other
cool people, at some point along the way.

    Hello there!

I've been a Usenet user on and off, but mostly active in the last
several months or year, since I got an Eternal September account.

Its a lot less active than it used to be, but there are still some good
threads to be had, as long as politics doesn't get involved.

I do use IRC a bit myself, but mostly hang out in one or two chatrooms
that are still quite active (perhaps because they also have a web
    portal).

In terms of clients, Thunderbird is probably the one I'd recommend but I
use SLRN myself. There are other clients I think out there, but they
seem to be geared towards downloading files. Claws mail is OK too, but
if you don't like Thunderbird, you probably won't like that.

Pan is pretty decent, not sure if available for Windows.

Unfortunately, no good client for mobile...

Bro, you waited 2 minutes, and then sent that. You okay?

Yeah, indeed. Usenet is asynchronous by nature ;-)
Relax, we *do* give a fuck.

Lol sounds a little sketchy? I assume this is open source? I'd love to
take a look at the code.

    It is a little sketchy.
I started to look into it a few days ago, and I think there's room
    for improvement.

The author says it is not opensource, but he shared the source with
    me privately.

It is not rocket science, but before creating a repo and sharing
I'd like to have his explicit permission. I already asked it,
but we need to wait for an answer (see also "usenet is asyncronous").

I've tried Efnet at some point, since I like the idea of being on an
historical network, but I couldn't join anything interesting.

Would you have any recommendation for good channels on Efnet?

I joined, in the same spirit of trying to learn more, historically
speaking, about irc, however, what I've mostly found is a bunch of
racists, who aren't as good at computers as they pretend to be. That's
not to say everyone is like that, but, that's the first initial
impression I get trying to immerse myself into the network. I'm sticking around, on the off chance I find cool people, who introduce me to other
cool people, at some point along the way.

Ah, you were a little unlucky with your first sample, perhaps.
But I think your approach is good.

    ...so, no channel recommendation?

If you're on libera, I'm taco on libera as well, and I am an op on
##reddit. Feel free to drop by and say hi!

    Done! :)

That's the most appropriate - if not prophetic -
use of the phrase "on the off chance" I've ever
    seen. :-)

There is this newsgroup about IRC.
Why not create an IRC channel about Usenet
    and start cross-pollinating :-?

    It already exists.
