No free domains in the real sense but you can use your own sub-domain to
    host static websites on github.

    <https://docs.github.com/en/pages/getting-started-with-github-pages/creating-a-github-pages-site>

    By sub-domains I mean something like: http://images.dalekellytoo.com

In fact you can also host a sub-domain on CloudFlare pages. <https://developers.cloudflare.com/pages/framework-guides/deploy-anything/>

Domains are never "free". You always have to pay for the registration to
a registry, depending on the TLD (.com, .net, .org etc.).

So even if Github would offer using your own custom domain for content,
they would be stupid to offer this for free.

You could always jump to Google Sites, which is still free.

It's in a way, a bad advice. That'll force visitors to leak more privacy to Google.

    what about using sub-registries ?

    sub.domain.registry

There is no "sub-registry", only domains and sub-domains.

Yes, Github could have domains where they provide sub-domains for there
users. But it makes no big difference if you have

    https://<username>.<something>.github.com

    or

    https://github.com/<username>/<something>

In any case, it is *not* your domain, but just an URL provided by Github.

And you don't get your own domain there either, just some URL which
    starts with https://sites.google.com/...

    Late reply!

You can use some HTTP forwarding via some free dynamic DNS service. I understand that it's not optimal.

You still miss the point: also a "free dynamic DNS service" does not
    give you your own domain.

And since getting your *own* domain *with* hosting starts at a few bucks
per month, I wouldn't even think about all the hassle using a service
like Google Sites or DynDNS and running your own machine at home.

Running your own machine at home means you have to provide the uplink,
take care for backups and maintenance and you have to pay for the
electricity as well. So you do not really save a lot.

Using a service like "Google Sites" gives you webspace, but not without
own domain unless you pay for it - so no big difference to regular web
    hosting.
