TLDNR: Too Long, Do Not Read
Wednesday, 15 October 2024
I was distracted when June turned into July, and didn't have
time to close out 2024SEW1.HTM and start 2024SEW2.HTM. By
the time I did have time, there were enough July and August
entries to make splitting it a chore, so I reflected that my
sewing diary was not likely to overrun the permitted file
size -- indeed, I don't think I've exceeded the number of
characters that can be put on one line, but I'm not going to
make a copy without hard returns to check -- and forged on;
I'd put the entire year into one file once before.
Now that it's getting on toward time to clean up the file
and start 2025, I remember that well over a thousand lines
are too many to validate in one sitting. The validator
doesn't mind, but *I* sure do!
And hey, it isn't that big a deal. Just make another copy
and delete the top from the new file and the bottom from the
old one. Not *quite* that simple, since there is stuff at
both top and bottom that is common to both files, and lines
that need to be changed, but still something that can be
done in a single morning and leave time to alter a pocket of
the winter pants I've just taken out of storage.
In the process, I noticed that a picture in an August entry
is missing. Obviously, I made a place for the picture and
forgot to take it. So I put the scissors on a blue folder,
took it outside, set the camera for tulip, and got a perfect
shot on the first click.
Before uploading the picture, I want to check what the link
calls it so that I can change the name to match. It takes a
few clicks to open the source code and the browser is open,
so I opened the Web copy of the diary, searched for "sci",
and jumped down to a picture of the scisssors. And the link
takes me to the enlarged version as it should. (Not as good
a picture as the one I've just taken, so I might remove it
or change the link to two views.)
Back to the file copy: the link still doesn't work. I
somehow deleted the two photos? Explorer says that they
are present in BLOGXXIV.
And, after splitting the file, I uploaded the entire book to
make sure I uploaded all the side issues. So we have the
same browser reading identical files in the same context and
getting different results.
Computers are not deterministic.
I think I'll hold off on sending this until after I find
time to validate, in case the problem silently fixes itself
as it did before.
For the curious:

I finished proofreading SEW1 yesterday, tonight I have time
to validate it and thought that I'd look at the fault in
SEW2 first. Web copy works, and . . . primary copy works.
And I haven't fiddled with the file in the least.
It's concievable that I looked at the working copy, but that
would not say that PAGESEW/BLOGXXIV/MEDSNIP.JPG didn't
exist, it would say that PCW/BLOGXXIV/MEDSNIP.JPG didn't
exist.
Wanders off gibbering.
