Old thread, but still useful for anyone finding it via search. We run a roll-off dumpster company (bgdumpsterrental.com) and the rule of thumb we give customers: a 20-yard container handles most single-room renovations or a full roof tear-off comfortably, but heavy materials like shingles, tile, or concrete hit the weight limit long before the container looks full. Volume and weight are two different problems - always ask your hauler about the weight allowance included, not just the size.
