What is the wattage of the space heater? Putting it on a cord is a bad
idea, anything over 10A on 16 GA is a dumb idea. NONE of the wire
    should be warm.

I'm following that rule, even though the label on the cords says it'll
handle 13A. I know someone tried it with a heater that used 12.5A (the
usual rating for 120V heaters). The cord was getting warm and soft all
    over and seemed unsafe.

Keep a phone handy and put 911 on speed dial.
