Jimmy Carter is now over 95 years old. That makes him the longest lived ex- president in US history, ahead of GHW Bush (94 years, 171 days), Gerald Ford (93 years, 165 days) Ronald Reagan (93 years, 120 days), etc. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_presidents_of_the_United_States_by_age

But are there any people who might plausibly have become president (but didn't) who have lived to a longer age than Carter (so far) has? (We'll assume that becoming president does not alter their lifespan.)

A few I can think of:

    (1) Bob Dole-now over 96. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bob_Dole

    (2) John Nance Garner--just barely missed living to the age of 99. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Nance_Garner

    3) Levi P. Morton--died on his 96th birthday. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Levi_P._Morton

    (4) Strom Thurmond--lived to be over 100. No, he had no chance of getting elected in 1948. But as president pro tempore of the Senate on September 11, 2001, if Bush, Cheney, and Hastert had all been killed...

    (5) Ernest 'Fritz" Hollings--lived to be over 97. No, his 1984 presidential candidacy didn't get anywhere, but I can see him as a "ticket-balancing" vice-president had the Democrats nominated a northern liberal for president in 1976.

    (6) Former Michigan governor William Milliken died a few month ago at the age of 97. Maybe a running mate for Reagan in 1980 to appeal to GOP moderates?

    Any other ideas?
